Lighten up the pressure as you finish on each hone. This will leave shallower scratches to he removed by the next stone which meams less work moving foward

Naniwa Superstones: I recently replaced one of my favourite stones the naniwa SS 8k 10mm on stand. I used a website I was tipped to use , '330mate'. I ordered a 20mm naniSS 8k, identical to mine only twice the stone, for $68.00, with exchange rate and postage, $97.00. In Australia, you will pay a lot more for a 10 mm stone, so check it out lads, they have the choseras too. Took 3 weeks to arrive, but saved me lots. Cheers Bob

I now use the Naniwa Traditional 1k for bevel set, 5k, 12k and ark black and it gives a really sharp edge that shaves smooth as silk.

Yours is an uncomplicated but effective progression. You no doubt are aware of HAD (Honing Acquisition disorder!) Well over the last few years I've gone through, clay based stone, like the Kings, sold them, moved on to a couple of Shaptons, now I am finally settled, but probably over done, with Naniwa Chosera 1k, for the bevels, Naniwa Superstones, 2k,3k,5k, 8k, then Suehiros, 10k,15k,20k, plus a select grade 8 x 3 coticule. Looking back I could have dropped a few of these, but, I found a good source of these Superstones, all 20mm on stands. All the same size as the new range of Traditional, Professional stones at 210 x 20 x 70. Many don't like the bases, but of all the stones I've owned I've only ever used the one side. I wonder what the purpose of using both sides is? I can only imagine people want to check both sides for the 'most flat' side. I have never needed to do that. At the business end of the synthetics, the SG 20k is a great stone. This progression is perfect for me, but I am happy to concede I could have gotten by without all of them. This hobby, is not only about the 'shave', it's a wonderful thing to learn the intricacies of steels and abrasives, occasionally I 'edge chase', trying to get the 'sharpest' razor. But in the end it's fun and one morning you pick up a recently honed razor and you say, 'wow' and are happy with your efforts. Good luck, and enjoy your honing, Cheers Bob

Bobski; I have Nortons, Shaptons, Naniwa, 20k Suehiro, a Jnat, A vintage Escher and now the Black ark. I find like most, the journey is as rewarding as the end results, the chance to look in the mirror after shaving with my way to many soaps, creams, brushes and say: Looking Good and Feelin Good! I have Lynn, Don and Mastro Livi as dependents.

I use a sharpie on my edges, It can help you get the feel for how much pressure you are using or when doing rolling X. etc.

I use it any time I change something up, such as a different stone, or a different hone pressure, one time it saved me because I forgot the tape and on that first pass I saw I was at a different angle.

Sounds like a nice line up. I use the Norton 1,4,8k and SS 12k. Just recently got a SS 2k to make the transition quicker from 1k to 4K (will see how it works out). If you haven't already, get a few holders. It really makes flattening and honing easier, especially with thinner stones.
    Regards,
