The ILR is ok but as others have said there are better options. I have one but it sits in a draw. The naniwa 12k is a far superior stone for a little extra money.
Eventually I may own that one too but this seemed to be a good way to go starting out

You can't have enough stones. You can always sell them. If I am honing a razor that I sold I always use the synthetics. When its for my personal use I like the edge off a coticule with a finish on an Escher. The possibilities are only bound by your budget. I bounce between RAD and HAD.
A number of folks that hone lots of razors for others have tried ILR and have said that the stones they used were not at all up to par. Then there are other folks that claim the stone is good performer. Looks like the stone is very inconsistent from specimen to specimen.
I looked at the ILR Facebook page and this confused me.

This is what the ILR guy is calling a Fire Edge. Can anyone describe what he is calling the Fire Edge Technique?
I'm not sure how to differentiate a Fire Edge from a dulled edge, so I'd appreciate it if someone could explain it.
I do not see anything about the origin of the stone there.
Just some history since you are new here. Originally the seller claimed the stone to come from the town of Imperia in Italy. Coincidentally we have a member that happens to live in that same town in Italy, and he confirmed that such stone is not mined there, only slate for backing the fabric of pool tables. Our member had tried that slate and confirmed it is not at all suitable for razors. Now the provenance pitch is no longer offered by the seller. You draw your own conclusions here.
I have looked at a lot of edges under a microscope. The Fire Edge does not look good to me but I am TRYING to give a bit of the benefit of doubt and am trying to assume something beyond delusion or deception.
What is it that he thought he was achieving here? I cannot find any explanation for his Fire Edge and would like a chance to find out what he is doing with this.
