    Default Escher

Hi guys, can I get some opinions please.

I just bought this stone quite cheap .
Its my first Escher , assuming it an Escher? There are no pictures of the back, so I am assuming are no labels their..
That could be a red flag . In saying that the seller had perfect feedback and has sold numerous straight razor items..

    Cheers... Joe

Surely looks like a thuringian...just the darker coloration looks like it might be infected with oil....or does it only looks like that ?

It's going to be at least a good quality black Thuringian. I cannot see the label from that distance though. Looks like the space for the slurry stone is missing also. Very very nice find! One of the best finishers available for razors and surgical instruments. I see the Escher label now. Black Escher!!

Looks clearly like a thuri (dark blue) and fits perfectly into the card box (slurry stone is missing). So it should be what the label says!
    Congrats to the find!

    Nice catch for sure!
The "scratches" are usually a good guide to a Thuringian hone. The Thuringians' often form a shiny skin when out of use for a while. They also had very consistent form factors of length/ width/ depth. The combination of those traits has been my way of finding them in the wild or sometimes on the net.

    Thanks for the input guys.
I did once have an Escher finished blade from Hart Steel years ago and I was very impressed.

Should I use it like my Jnats. DMT slurry and hone until I see fit.

    Would I lap it DMT 325 / Atoma 1200 / Nagura ?

    cheers

Anyone know where I can get a slurry stone from?

    Sorry for the long wait.
Lap to flat. A fine diamond card or plate will raise a slurry. Enjoy the stone, your Jnat practice will get you started. Don't use any Nagura but only the slurry reduction.
I expected a couple of other people responding.

@JOB15 give it some time and exercise. With feather light touch comes the feather light edge, identical to the best of the jnats. It's just a bit slower, but not a lot. I use a dark blue, apparently the most common and the least loved (at least on the forums it looks like it) and it's a top notch hone. I doubt it gets any better, for me at least. If I can't feel the edge on my face and no sting of the AS, there's nothing more to ask for.
As the time passes, so we learn.

I have a few stones that can produce an edge with those 2 qualities (Can't feel edge, no burn from AS). The third is how easy the cutting action is, but to a degree that's just nit picking. My least keen edges (Coticule, ZY Cnat) still get me a close, clean, and comfortable shave even if they do have a smidge of resistance compared to my keener edges (Shapton Kuromaku 12K, Arkansas, Jnat). I have razors honed with both Coti & Cnat in my rotation, and no desire to re-hone them with a keener edge. Unless it's to max the blade on the 12K then walk it back on the naturals just to see what happens.

I don't have any urges to pick up hones beyond the 12K. To go much beyond that you're looking at a hone that costs over $300. Cheaper (By a long shot) to start using paste at that point. The only things really left on my HAD list are a good Thuri, and maybe some barber hones for kicks 'n grins.
