Complete the progression, a FUN exercise!:)

hello Folks! me again with a question about progressions and hones and where to grow, and next steps... this time in an ingenious fun way to extract the knoweledge our of your brains!! :)...

Imagine you have a 1k Chosera, Nortron combo 4K/8K, 12K Naniwa SS, and Suehiro Gokumyo 20K... say you want to replace the 4/8K Norton with any 1, 2 or 3, or even 4 stones....

here's the FUN part... you get to fill the blank line with the progression you want (yeah of course i will take your advise even when i already kind of have some on my mind)

maybe we should limit this to Synthetic stones only just for the kicks ;)

so.. the magic progression for you would be (copy and paste and ill the blank with your config in your reply):

Naniwa Chosera 1k, ________,_________,____________, Naniwa SS 12K, Suehiro Gokumyo 20K


here are some examples:

Chosera 1k, Nani SS 3K, Nani SS 8K ,Nani SS 12K, SG 20K

of course we are looking for Speed on bevel set + good feedback + consistency on the scratch patterns and also that you can easily reduce the scratches from the previous stone with the next one...

I prefer a lower jump from the 1k, so I'm always going to follow with a 2k. The Chosera/Pro is just plain nicer than the SS5k, though both are great. The SS8k fits best between the 5k and the 12k.

It kind of depends on your skill level a little. Some one new to honing would get better or faster results going 1K 3k 8K 12 K buT someone with more experience would likely find the route easier to go 1K 5K 8K 12k. On my next hone purchase I intend to go with Naniwa 5K and an 8K to replace my Norton 4/8

Were I to go with the Naniwa line, this is along the lines of what I'd choose. Probably go Chosera 1K, SS 2K & 5K, then 12K. Seems to me the 8K would almost* be redundant. Or at least an easy stone to skip. I suppose it's the same operating theory as RezDog skipping the 2K or 3K and going straight to 5K, just on the other end of the spectrum.

Edit - the reason I'd go with SS instead of Chosera/Pro - the potential for crazing (at least as I understand it) is lower with SS. It would drive me nuts to have that happen, even if it is just a visual thing and not something that negatively impacts honing. And they're cheaper too, so that's a (small) tick in their favor.

I really like the SuperStones. I like the Pros a little better. They don't load up like the SuperStones do so they are a little faster.

And yes, the 8k almost is redundant. You can go from 5k to 12k. This is a case of do as I say, not as I do, because I prefer the smallest possible jumps.

Chosera 1k, Nani SS 3K, Nani SS 5K, Nani SS 8K, Nani SS 12K, SG 20K...mainly because I already have the full progression of Naniwa SS and have no experience with the Chosera/Pros. A wise man once talked me out of jumping further into HAD and buying Choseras. My hones are not earning me income and what I have gets the job done well, especially given that they are better suited for a beginner. (I was also similarly convinced not to buy Shaptons, a coticule, and Jnats.)

1k Chosera, 5k Spaton Pro, 8k Shapton Pro, 12k Super stone(I use 10k instead) , 20k

Like Utopian I like less in between hones in the beginnings, and like speedster I don't hone for cash. I have used for the last 18 months the following. Chosera 1k, Naniwa SS 2K, 3k, 5k,8k, 10k, then to the Suehiro Gokumyo 20k. I also have a Naniwa 4k lobster brand deluxe stone, that's several years old. It's 210x 25 x 75 and is brown in colour. It used to be my second stone up from a 1k king, until it was virtually retired with the acquisition of the superstones. Many will say the SS 2k is not needed but it removes the Chosera 1k stria very well, and it's cheap, so I'm happy with that progression.

Well, I guess I can't play because the only hones I have of the ones listed are the Chosera 1k and the Norton 4k/8k. I do have a Coticule, Chinese 12k, the Naniwa Green Brick, King 1k/6k, Norton 220/1k and the Welsh Slate Dragon Tongue & Yellow Lake.

So, since I can't play the game my progression is my secret.......he! he!

I have tried most of the combinations and others, not listed. It really does not matter, if you are finishing on a 12k Super Stone and or a SG20. I usually mix the 1-12k stones, with a variety of stone, almost daily and there is no difference on the finished edge.

If you are going to jump to a natural finisher the 8K, Naniwa old Snow White Junpaku, is a nice pre-finish stone, but not, that much nicer than a Norton 8k that it would make, that much of a difference. But if you finish on a 12k, higher or natural, then it makes no difference.

Mix and match makers, as long as, they are quality stones. The low grit stones don’t matter, especially if you are not pro-honing.

What matters is setting a bevel fully, on an 800 - 4k, and finishing the edge as straight as possible. Technique and experience.

Hone a thousand razors, with the progression you have, then decide.

My favorite progression is: secure blade in scales with rubber bands, cover with bubble wrap, place in box then send it to someone that knows what the heck they are doing.

I've actually had successes in honing, but I'd rather let someone else do the heavy lifting, then just maintain with stropping and a 12k SS. For some strange reason, I like the tension of sending your baby out, then the anticipation of her return.

I don't think the progression is crucial. The end result is likely to be the same whatever you do.

I can get by just fine with nothing but a barber hone, but that was not what the OP asked.

This. I can get by with a 1K bevel setter and a Barber hone. But, you can't stop HAD. Sure he can get along perfectly fine with his Norton hones. But even if he chose to stick with them, there'd still be that Naniwa itch just waiting to be scratched. If not now, then later on down the line. All you can really do is tell someone which hone(s) you'd pickup and why. What they do with that information is up to them.

You don't need the 1k.

Back when all I had was a couple of barber hones, I assumed that I could not use much pressure and so a typical bevel set took a couple of hours. Now, I can do a bevel set on an average undamaged full hollow in about 10-15 minutes on a Swaty.

That is, I CAN and I HAVE, but I ain't gonna do it again unless it's to prove it to someone else!

The 1k is more of a want. I've gotten spoiled. I have learned you can do a lot with a Swaty. More than I would've suspected, and faster at that. But as you said, not something I'd want to do regularly.

Eventually I'll get a second camera and then I can do a proper set of honing videos. When that happens, I'll do full Swaty honing. Don't hold your breath though.

Is that not a bit contradictory?

For the hobbyist as most are, you would have to hone 1.8 razors a day for five years to get to the 1000 razor mark. So, with great respect, most honers out there will never be able to perform the test described.

I don't think it is. I've learned to set bevels and work small chips out without a 1K, but I would much rather have one. I've been surprised by the versatility and speed of the Swaty (and just about every other finishing type hone I own). And learned to do a lot, with only a little. But that doesn't mean that I'm going to be paring down the hone collection to a single stone, or even single progression of stones, any time soon.

He who dies with the most toys wins, or so I read from a wise fellow on these forums.

Edit: Besides, there's a reason I'm slowly working toward the Shapton version of the hone progression I suggested on the first page. Naturals and barber hones are fun, but it's hard to beat a solid run of synthetics when you don't want to spend all day just honing a restoration, new purchase, pocket or kitchen knife.

I was referring to a 1K. Did it with barber's hones, yes. Never again, Yes!

Hmm...I'll agree with that. I called it a want because it can be done without. But I wouldn't want to. It's one of those tools I don't use often, but when I do I'm sure glad I've got it on hand.

So, we don't need a 1k hone for setting bevels, all we need is a barber hone, and the progression doesn't matter either. Ok good luck with that.

1.8 razors a day times X 365 days X 5 years? 1 X 365 X 5 = 1, 825

that's only 1 razor a day, 1.8 will net you 3285 in 5 years LOL

Let's see. 1K bevel set, .2. 4K, would make .4 and 8K .6, so if your next hone were 12K then you could feasibly strop and shave. Or you could wait til next day to hit it with Chrome ox or your favorite natural for a DFS. :tameshigiri: :tu
