Honing on a postage stamp?

I have this very small Belgian cuticle (about the size of a large postage stamp) that I was hoping to hone on. I've already tried once with no luck now I'm hoping for advice! Maybe try taking the hone to the razor instead of taking the razor to the hone..

I don't see why you can't do it..keeping a slurry would be a challenge though.

You would have to slide the whole edge across the stone before reaching the bottom. Going north to south and visa versa.or circles you could get away with..

And it's not a "bit small" for a razor hone? Well, best of luck to you.

It can be done with nearly lateral x-strokes.

If you are determined to make it work, I have no doubt that you will make it work.

Personally, I like full size rectangular stones. I would like to try some of the traditional hones (Coticule, Escher, JNATs, etc.), but full size hones are either unavailable or quite expensive, more than I am inclined to pay. Thus, if I want to try these stones, I am going to have to learn how to hone on smaller stones, although perhaps not quite this small.

I am glad you glued the tiny Coticule to a paddle as you might end up with several more Band Aids on your fingers if you tried honing without the paddle.

Excellent title for a thread! I have successfully honed a razor on a coticule slurry stone measuring approximately 1-3/8" x 2-1/2" (no slurry used). And it's done exactly as Utopian and Modine said: lateral X-strokes.

it would help if you use a smaller razor, like a 4/8 or 9/16. Then instead of squaring up to it like how it sets in the paddle picture, I would turn it 45 degrees into a diamond position to get every fraction of an inch of travel on the stroke as you can. Finally, this is more of a style preference, but i'd definitely keep both hands on the razor to help guide it on that tiny real estate.

*edit - also, use a rolling x-stroke since it has a smaller point of contact from razor to stone.

By the time you get this stone and the technique figured out it will be gone........

I would worry about dragging the edge off the end of the stone.
