what hone is this ?

hi guys,

i found this stone few weeks earlier. i thought it was a "la lune" but when i looked to other side there is some brown spot. i don't think it is saturat because nothing shiny on the stone.


would you have any idea what it can be and it's grit approximately?













thanks by advance for any help. for supplement information, it smells oils.

Really hard to tell from the pics ,give it a lap and clean up and it should make it easier also do you think it's a natural stone or man made? I have a guess at a tamO'shanter or scotch hone.

looks a lot like the Welch slate i had. only way to tell the grit is to lap and possibly burnish it.

Yeh well it's not a tam that's for sure. Looks like a nice fine stone other than that still really can't tell much about it ,in some pics it looks brownish and others its greenish lap it and see how hard it is ,what colour the slurry is does it have a smell ,other than oil that is.You just need a good sized square flat tile and some fine grit wet and dry sand paper ,draw a grid on it with pencil and wet it up and away you go keep sanding with the wet paper until all the pencil grid is gone and she should be pretty flat and clean and you will find out how hard it is and what the slurry looks like. Sadly we may still not be able to tell you what it is but she will be ready to use . Cheers.

May I ask why you thought it may have been a La Lune - is it from France? If so, it may be a Pyrenees stone, a coarser stone to use after a 1k, between 2-6k. Here is an example https://razorlovestones.wordpress.co...-des-pyrenees/

it looks like "la lune" i did not started to work for now but i will have to do it soon. also it looks like a la lune (one side, for the other i will have to clean the hone)

in the link you sent the hone is "cutted" with a shape like " / ". mine does not have that. i have a saturat, but this one does not look as a saturat. that's why i removed the saturat option. also i'm pretty sure it's not pyrennes, when i bought it i showed it to a friend, he told me it was for final polishing.

just the thing is; i know i had a least one la lune, and i was sure this second was a la lune too. but unfortunately i don't remember if the second la lune was this one or an other hone i have. i need to check them all, and i'm just so lazy with the end of summer (la vie est dure )...
