SPIKE Barber hone - Bauer Mfg Co.

This is the Bauer SPIKE Barber hone. This was referred to as a pocket hone. Bauer MFG history Bauer Taxicab Mfg. Co., Perry S. Bauer, Bauer Cab, Bauer Taxi Co., Bauer Mfg Co., Chicago - Coachbult.com . Traveling salesmen gave aware freebies with the company names or logos much like today with pens and calculators. This mustard colored single grit one-sided hone was manufactured and private labeled by American Hone Co and measures 2” L x 3-1/2” W x ½”H. Primary abrasive is 1200F same as 00 Frictionite.

Two identical King Midas Extra Good razors were chosen to test this Barber hone. Both razors were taken to a 1K-4K-Norton 8K level. One of the razors was then progressed to the approx. 15K level on a much finer stone. The edges were visually inspected at 100X magnification at each interval.

8 X-laps, strokes or passes were made with each razor on the Bauer Spike to see if it would improve or degrade the razor taken to the Norton 8K edge and the razor honed to the approx. 15K edge.

Conclusion: Because of the high quality of the Bauer Mfg. Co. *Spike* pocket hone a more thorough test has been conducted. The razors edge was significantly improved off the 8K Norton. No more than 8 very light laps should be done with this hone or the fine razor edge will be destroyed. This is a very fast cutting, effective high performance synthetic hone. The approx. 15K edge was maintained. This hone will easily refresh an edge to approx. 15K level. Stropping on leather would be enough to prep the edge for shaving.
