    Default Advice on lapping ?

    Hi Guys ,
I have a nice Belgian coticule which I use (water only) for freshen-ups ! I have recently purchased a Llyn Melynllyn which was pretty good on arrival but required a further bit of lapping (visibly had one or two scratches) . This I’ve done on a norton flattening plate though the surface is now a little Matt . What’s the best way to get the surface face back to slippery smooth? I do have an accompanying slurry stone - should I hit it with that or try further lapping on a superfine piece of wet n dry!

I would smooth it out with some 1000 grit sandpaper on flat surface. Then you could run the coticule over the surface some or the slurry stone to finish smoothing it out.

Thanks Christian, I think I may give it a buff with the Belgian coticule slurry stone and see what that does, just looks a little too Matt for me to risk using as a finisher/refreshing stone at the moment

I would try to shine it back up the same way you would a Translucent Arkansas stone. Take it up to a fine grit sand paper as Christian said above and then burnish with a heavy piece of steel. An old tool, heavy kitchen knife, piece of stock tool steel, etc.

The Llyn is very soft and will scratch easily. The 1000 will fix the scratch. Unless they are catching or situated in such a way that the blade bumps when it hits them I tend not to be too concerned with scratches. A lot of them are harmless in the soft hone and disappear quickly.

I’ve got all scratches out by doing a full lap with a norton flattening plate - was just after best method of taking the mattness back to a silky almost polished surface !
