Synthetic naniwa and suehiro

1st question is, what is the difference between the Naniwa Gouken Fuji 8k and the snow white 8k? Also what is the benefit of ending on a suehiro 20k after the Naniwa Gouken kagayaki 12k? Thanks in advance!!

. The Gouken kagayaki 12k is tha same as the 12k sharpening/specialty stone (i.e. the old superstone), using the 20K after the 12K should give you a noticeable bump in edge, however you could likely go straight from 8K to the 20K without any trouble.

I use the Fuji 8k and sometimes following with the 12K sharpening stone. There is a noticeable increase in sharpness but I prefer the 8k as it is still plenty sharp and I find it a bit smoother.

I usually follow the 8k with a Jnat as I much prefer the edges I get from them (i.e. sharper and smother then either the 8K or the 12K).

It depends on the razor. Sometimes 10-20 but rarely more than 20.

I don't think what 8k stone you get matters to much if it is just part of progression. I would just go with naniwa regular 8k other than snow white to save some money if you getting the 20k. I have used naniwa 8k and shapton 8k ceramic whetstone and I liked the shapton more personally.

Before you buy the 20k synthetic stone though I would have someone hone 2 of your razors up, one on 12k synthetic and other on 20k. Just so you know if you really want the 20k to use after 12k or not.

I have used the Snow White for some time and despite the rep it has I have gone back to using naniwas 8 k and I like it better . As for the 20 k after 12 k it really does work improve the smoothness of your edge I have used as little has 10 strokes and as many as 50 strokes and I don’t think you could over do it as it just seems to smooth your edge I really like mine and tend to use it on all my razors . So I tend to average 30 finishing strokes on the 20 k with no problem s

If you like synth edges - and many are good, I am not a natural snob - you'll probably like it. If you don't you'll likely be able to flip it for what you have in it.

It is a hard SOB though, it took loose SiC to lap mine flat and it still isn't perfect. Arkansas hard but blazing fast given that it's 20k.

Go for it, you won't regret it. That said, a 1% jnat is a bit better but far more expensive to get.
