I have one and another on the way. The one I have, I rate highly as a finisher or prefinisher before a coticule. I've been using it purely with water. I've read everything I could find online. Most discussions are of where these stones came from and whether some are different. I'm only interested in any honing experience and advice on these stones please.
A few years ago they were all the rage, I too was bit by the bug and bought a few. As you may know there are many posts here and elsewhere on “Purple” or “French Hones”. They are interesting but I fear the grit is limited or can be worked to, possibly just a bit higher than 8k, similar to a good Thuringian.
They are pretty much like any other slate or coticule, my best results are as finishers after 8k synthetic. Best results were with a few drops of Smith’s Honing solution or Ballistol on a wet and lightly slurried stone. Put your Smiths or Ballistol into a one ounce bottle that will release a drop at a time.
Try a micro bevel.
Results vary depending on the stone and edge preparation of the bevel and edge. Recently there were a few for sale in the BST.
