Thanked: 0Honing on Lorraine/Salm Rouge
I have one and another on the way. The one I have, I rate highly as a finisher or prefinisher before a coticule. I've been using it purely with water. I've read everything I could find online. Most discussions are of where these stones came from and whether some are different. I'm only interested in any honing experience and advice on these stones please.

Thanked: 3215A few years ago they were all the rage, I too was bit by the bug and bought a few. As you may know there are many posts here and elsewhere on “Purple” or “French Hones”. They are interesting but I fear the grit is limited or can be worked to, possibly just a bit higher than 8k, similar to a good Thuringian.
They are pretty much like any other slate or coticule, my best results are as finishers after 8k synthetic. Best results were with a few drops of Smith’s Honing solution or Ballistol on a wet and lightly slurried stone. Put your Smiths or Ballistol into a one ounce bottle that will release a drop at a time.
Try a micro bevel.
Results vary depending on the stone and edge preparation of the bevel and edge. Recently there were a few for sale in the BST.
