Thread: Welsh Tri-hones, good deal?

I just find this set of hones called Welsh Tri-hones for 80€ (home made wood box included).

From left to right :

1) DRAGONS TONGUE (estimated grit 8-10K)
2) PURPLE LLYN MELYNLLYN (estimated grit 12k)
3) Welsh Thuringian - DARK GREY BLACK SLATE (estimated grit 15K+)








1) For 80€, it's a good deal or not?
2) Any one have experience with those stone?

Those strike me as the Welsh "Tri-hones" that AJ (Antony) has been selling on the UK ebay site for years. Not knowing the dimensions or what they fetch these days, I cannot speak to their being a good deal or not--and if it pertains to an active auction, I think that is frowned upon--but as to actual use, I am a big, big fan of the "purple" in particular after a coticule, as well as the "Welsh Thuringian" after the "purple" as need be. Frankly, some of the best "sharp" shaving edges I've consistently received have been from these in spite of the hype surrounding dozens of other stones (others will certainly differ here, but I can only speak from my own experience of things).

The dragon's tongue is perhaps best described as a poor-man's coticule. Not to be dismissed, though, if you don't have a coticule and the price of things there is prohibitive.

What I use normally as to a complete progression: 1k/3k Suehiro kitchen synth combo > coticule (water only, no slurry) > Welsh purple slate (as above, normally with light machine oil). If that doesn't do it, then it's off to either a roughened leather strop lined with Solingen red paste or the said "Welsh Thuringian."

Really underestimated stones IMO. And I never use them with a slurry FWIW.

I have a purple (also acquit eBay UK) and find it a great finisher. Can’t speak to the other two

I have no experience with any but know the purple and dragon's tongue as good by reputation. That is a nice package though with the custom box and the slurry stones. It would be a nice set if the price is right.

I used to have a Dragon's Tongue, and I liked it for what it was (mid grit range, natural stone).

You'd definitely need to provide sizes to get better input. But the biggest question in my mind is whether they fit your size preference. I just don't really like short stones, so if they are small, the price wouldn't matter to me.

The size for each stone is :

15 cm x 7,5cm x 2 cm
6 inch x 3 inch x 0,7 inch

6x3 is enough if you like that size. As to price, i dont think that is allowed here. One guys opinion on a fair lrice is different from the next. Its all depending on your pocket book. Think of it as what each stone will cost you and the box has got to be worth a little too. So break up that 80 3.5 ways and see if that is good enough for you. JMO.
