Thread: Sanding corners of DMT

Hi,

I've got a DMT course stone, but one of the corners is slightly raised, causing it to catch the stone it is lapping, which then cuts a little dent in it. Has anyone ever sanded down a part of a DMT stone, as that is what I'm hoping to do. I think that because it's just in one corner, it shouldn't do any damage to the stone.

Any advice would be great.

I had this same problems with my DMT 1200 and 8k. I didn't use sandpaper, but I did use the backside of a spyderco hone held at an oblique angle to knock down those high spots.

I bet you could use some other hard hone and get the same effect. I wouldn't use sandpaper...that just seems like a bad idea, don't ask me why.

Seems to be a common problem.I hit the corners of all of mine on the bench grinder fine stone.Best regards gary

If you're talking about a small divot I took the shank of a screw driver and ran it hard around the edges on mine. If it is a defect in the manufacturing of the plate see #4 in the FAQ here. I sent my D8C and my D8F back a week ago. Checking them with my straight edge I found they are not flat. Both had a slight camber in them. The C worse then the F but both are just paperweights AFAIC. I'll see what I get back from them and let y'all know.

I have found one of the corners on my DMT DC8 seems a little high as i have only lapped my Norton 4000/8000 on it once and that corner has worn down! not sure what to do about it. getting my shapton 16000 this week so hope it wont interfere with lapping that!

Hi, what model is your DMT? I have a DMT DC8 for lapping my Norton and Shapton, i was wondering how this DMT will stand up to lapping other hones.

Fraserazor: It is also a DMT DC8. I use it for lapping both my norton and a finishing stone, and I don't feel the need for any other lapping stone.

Thanks for your reply, I was just concerned lapping waterstones and the Shapton on my DC8 would ware it out!

Well, I have lapped a Norton 8K about a dozen times or so and it DOES wear it down a little.

Still cuts like a monster on cutlery, but it did slow it down a fair amount.
