If I were looking to buy a DMT 8x3 that the only purpose of buying it would be, to lap natural stones, and barbers hones, what would be the one that I wanted????? This would only be used as a lapping plate, for those stones not for my Shaptons, my GDLP is used for those....
I guess also is that my best choice??? under $100
And is the best one for this use avaiable at Woodcraft???

That would be the DMT D8C. 325 grit.

I got my DMT D8C at woodcraft on sale. I don't remember what I payed for the 8C but I bought it a DMT 8X3 1200 and a couple of other little things for around 100.00 +or-.

I've been doing my big-job lapping with 3m paper on glass, then going to the DMT8E, then to really make em smooth the DMT8EE. Stiction gets to be a bit of a problem, but it's worth it for the smooooooooth surface the 8E or 8EE leaves.
Edit: Craftsmanstudios ships from San Diego, so it doesn't take forever to get shipments from them to Utah or I Da Ho.
Oh man decisions, decisions, Now I am looking at that 600 D8F thinking, would that leave a better surface on the stones and hones even if it took longer????
+1 on D8C from Craftsmanstudio. Laps the shapton nicely, too.
Just buy both. The 325 for knocking it flat and the 600 for smoothing it out.Quote:

Well, just look at it this way... If you woulda bought the DMT from woodcraft, it would have cost you about 35 bucks more (15 on the stone, and 20 for shipping... yeah, they are *that* heavy), which just about covers the cost of another DMT stone from craftsman! So since you're such a smart shopper, you're getting two for the price of one!

Yes checked there first, but "flat pizza on floor" is right Craftsman, is way, way cheaper with that free shipping, even though his logic reminds of my wife shopping for shoes :D
I have the 325 grit DMT and use it to lap my coticules, escher and 1k shapton and it works great.
I don't have a swaty, but utopian told me you want the one that is courser than the 325 for swatys and chinese 12ks or you may be lapping for quite a while.
No, Wife logic would be more like "It's on sale here. You're almost getting 2 for the price of one. That's such a good deal you should buy 4". I think Craftsmanstudio has free shipping on the Shaptons. Otherwise you have to get over a $75 order for the free shipping on something else. ...so you'd have to be NUTS to buy less than 2!Quote:

I got mine at LINK and was the cheapest I could find at the time. It's still cheap.
I use it for everything but my Shaptons which get the GDLP care.

Hello Glen. I recently replaced a set of DMT's [8c,8f,8e] because I wore the old set out lapping my Chinese and Spyderco hones. I wouldn't be without them for my kitchen knives. My knives are in the best shape they have ever been. I got the DMT's at Craftsman Studio. Good price and fast shipping. I think you get a holder if you buy all three.

Just checking to see if what your results were. I know you got the Naniwa set.
My thoughts are the D8C is probably the go to stone. I'm thinking the Duo sharp (polka dot) with the 320/600 grit combo in 10" would be even better though. Less stiction and more surface area. ??? They gave me a 120 grit version that is awesome, but leaves scratches, the 320 is a lot smoother, but its so small and has a lot of stiction. Anyway, wondering if you found a better solution. I'm really thinking hard about that combo... Figure I could sell both my XX, C, and d6F to pay for it. :P
I do a lot of lapping, I went from my D8C to the D8XX, It's a God send. The only thing is, it leaves the surface rough, so you have to either hit it with a D8C or wet sandpaper....It's a must for those hard Barber hones....
