Thread: Thuringian Stone Experts.....converge!

Is anyone familiar with or does anyone have information on Karl Brodt & Sohn Thuringian stones?

I picked this one up some time ago. It's missing its rubber as virtually all boxed vintage Thuringian stones seem to. The paper label on the old wooden box has little that can be read. I'm almost certain it says Karl Brodt & Sohn manufacturers. 5"x1.5"x1"

The color is a light gray. I've added some comparison Thuringians that are darker for color comparison. The color of this stone is in my memory identical to the Hohenzollern Thuringian stone I sold to Kees last year in a fit of idiocacy. I say this because Kees went on then to say that the Hohenzollern performed so well he considered among if not the top stone even among his Eschers.

Any info on the manufacturer name would be appreciated.






Karl Brodt stone is in the middle in the picture above. The stone to the left is a Dark Blue Escher (labeled) and to the right, a darker than a dark blue escher unlabeled Thuringian which is finer than a DB Escher (go figure).

I forgot a close up of the Karl Brodt stone. It has very tiny black flecks peppered lightly amidst the light gray. Reminiscent of a Nakayama Asagi stone I once owned.

Your new hone seems to have the same colour as the Hohenzollern you sold me some time ago. That one missed a rubber as well. I made a rubber by cutting a piece off a Thuringian of the same colour.

THe Hohenzollern had a very similar box and little piece of wood that now separates hone from rubber. In the right of your box seems to be a similar dividing piece.

What are your thoughts on your Hohenzollern's performance, Kees?

You're right, the boxes seem identical in construction; I kept a folder of the Hohenzollern pictures and have reviewed them.

@Chris: IMHO the Hohenzollern is on a par with or even slightly finer than my Y/G Escher. To make a rubber for it I cut a Thuringian of the same colour and fineness in half, I have got the other half still, so if you feel yours is identical I can send it to you.

Nice hones Chris. I'm not familiar with the new one you've asked about but juxtaposed against the others it looks like a yellow/green to me. BTW, remember Sham posting photos of his brown Eschers ? I have one of them that Sham and I did a trade on. If the color of you Fox is accurately depicted in the photo it is mighty close if not right on to my brown "Escher" or whatever it is.

Guess what, I just checked my two labeled Y/G Eschers under the 30x and they have black specks sprinkled throughout. Looks like you have something there Chris.
