i have a 8,000 and 12,000 naniwa super stones...
would like to get the set needed from setting the bevel to ready to go......
im gonna buy the 1,000 but i dont know weather to buy the 3,000 or 5,000 didn't know if they were bolth needed for the sharpening stage?....

Isn't there an 800 / 5,000 naniwa superstone combination hone? I thought I have seen that before, maybe would be your answer
i belive theres a 3k/8k combo one....but i already have the 8k...
mainly just wondering if i should go with the 3,000 or the 5,000 in between the 1k, and 8k
I use the 1 to set the bevel if necessary and the 3 and 5 for sharpening. IME the 8 is enough for polishing but of course you can go beyond that with a 10 or 12 and I often do. Just IMO.

SRD sells the 5k-8k-12k as a set so I take that as some sort of recommendation from the experts.
Anyway, I bought that plus the 1k.
That's what I have & it works fine. You don't really need the 3K--OK, maybe HAD might say differently. :)
Coming off the 1K, the 1st set of 40 circles & 10 x-strokes w/ light pressure AFAIK does pretty much what the 3K would do anyway.

I have the 1k 3k 5k and I've only done a few razors on them and only used the norton 4k 8k once, but it seems like a valid point. The micron sizes compare. Many people say you do not need both, but I dunno. I would honestly say get both, because you could go from 1k to 5k, but in some situations you won't need to drop down to the 1k, but the 5k would be too fine to start on. That was my thought.
I'm with Gary and Karl on the 1,3,5, and 8. If you have the extra $ go for the 12 too. If the $ are tight some chrom ox and make a balsa strop and get the 12K when you have the extra $$.
