My vintage Razor Hone. This is what started this journey!

My father-in-law gave me this. He got it from his father-in-law. It is well used but in good shape. I have no idea about the grit on this thing but it does a good polish on a blade. Now i just need a good vintage blade to go with it.

Check out the SRP classifieds and/or ebay, local flea markets, antique parlors. Just make sure the blade is full and without uneven hone wear on the spine and edge, the scales are not cracked at the pivot and like that.

Im going to check the gunshow this weekend with new purchases in mind. Ive seen them there but never payed any attention. Go figure. Now I have more knowledge to work with and will try to use it.

The only thing about the gun shows for finding straights .... IME .... is the guys selling them are awful proud of them. Lot of times, like antique stores, they price them way high. Check out the classifieds archive here just to get an idea of what guys really pay for them before you go.

Be aware that gun shows frequently have the new "straight razor shaped" items from China and Pakistan.
Admire the pretty scales on those items and walk away.

Most likely not they are typically made from cheap plastic. If you need a set your best bet is to just make some they really are not to hard to do.

Or find a vintage razor that is just destroyed but has good scales and pay a very low I mean very low price for the whole razor. Then you just break the razor down into its parts and your the scales on a good blade

Or email some of the guys that restore razors and see if they have an old pair of scales they would be willing to part with.

I did pick up two old straights at the gun show. One has been killed on a grinder so thats the scale I'm gona use for my Anchor Brand. The other one has som good blade left, I'm trying to hone it and see if it will do any good. No makers mark on the tang so I'm not hopeful. I did see a nice Wade and Butcher for $90, it showed no hone ware on the spine and had simple white plastic scales but i cant justify that right now. I wanted it though.
