I would like to hear from members who own and use the 00 Frictionite hone.
I have used one for years and it seems to work faster than most barber hones.

I got one about a month ago in a local antique store. It came in a little leather pouch. After lapping i was suprised how fast it was. I bought it more as a curiousity and don't know where it would fit in my set up but imagine it would be a great touch up stone.

that is one keeper, they work really good and really fast, need to know which side is the rough and fine though.

Are they all two sided?? I thought mine looked and felt the same on both sides.

Here are pics of the "Little Frictionite" that I have. It is one grit only for sure. Does yours look like this one?
Mike
DM, I've got one and used it only a couple of times. Mine definitely got the edge sharper with a few dry laps on the 'rough' and a few on the smooth side. It isn't really rough just says,"use this side first".
Mike, mine is stamped 00 Frictionite and it is 4 3/8 x 2". The darker side is the side it says to use first. The instructions for use are on a label glued onto one side. I suspect if yours has one color slightly darker that is the side you'll want to use first.
Hi Jimmy,
If one side is different I really can't tell on mine I cleaned of one end and looked real close. also this little guy is 3 1/2 X 2.
Ciao
Mike
Mike the difference is so subtle that if I didn't have the label I would have a hard time telling it. Take a look at it under good light and if it still appears to be the same lap it on both sides and let it dry and take another look. I'd bet a dollar to a donut that it would be the same as it's larger cousin.
EDIT; I am showing my age.... a donut is probably worth more than a dollar nowadays.
I did look with magnification and very good light. I think the only way to tell if i got a piece of metal and rubbed and looked to see result. Now you made me hungry and could use a donut, but watermelon will have to do.:)

I can see the separation on it in the pic. Yours is also double sided. On the other note, I don't know if they are all double sided but both of mines are. BTW if someone is interested in getting one PM. I don't have use for two.
I have a few Frictionites I got from Tilly .. they don't look anything like those .. I think mine are 24's - Black in colour with some nice glittery speckles . Lithides according to Tilly were made from Frictionites .
Anyhooz due to the size I don't use mine that often but I have to say even tho mine are different they polish pretty quickly .. I wouldn't part with them ,.,

I just recieved one from a friend! I have been searching around, trying to find about what grit each side is and the best way to use them. Mine is two sided also. I can lap it and try it out on a couple razors, then report my findings. I can also take some pictures.
The one I have is 2 1/4 wide, 4 1/2 long, 5/8 " wide and is two sided.
It states on one side NO 00 Frictionite DE LUXE and on the other a label which says use this side first and upside down it says finish honing on this side. On the end it American Hone Co, Moravia, Iowa.
It is very fast cutting and I cannot tell much difference in either side by touch.
If I need to tune up a razor in a hurry this is the one i go to.
For regular maintence I use a smaller two sided hone called the Moravian, made by the same company.
I bought both of these hones in the early 70's along with their version of the swaty and one called a super punjab.
All good hones.
I picked this hone up last weekend. I don't know for sure if it's a Frictionite or not. The leather case it came with, I think says "No 00," but I'm not 100% sure because of the stain. The text on the hone itself is "AM. Hone Co. Olean N.Y." Sorry I can't really add anything in terms of experience of usage. Do you all think this is a Frictionite hone, or some other hone put in a Frictionite case? The hone is in great shape. I don't think it's ever been used. The color of the lighter side shows up about right in the photos. The darker side looks more gray, when it is really a dark brown. The light brown side feels finer to the touch and I assume the finer grit, but I really have no idea. Both sides feel pretty similar. dimentions are 2"x4-3/8"x5/8."

I like the "top", yellowish side, for a final finish or touch-up. It's one of my most used hones. Mine came in a green cloth shaped like the leather one. This is the one I have:

yellow side is finer then brown . Brown side is a very fast cutter. How do you guys use it? wet dry etc.
Mine is from the American Hone Co after the move to Ames, Iowa and is so marked. Looks the same though. I use mine dry so far. Works very well for touching up. What I've been doing is sharpening to an 8k level and then experimenting with various barber hones to see how much better they will leave the edge after the barber hones.
Like Jimmy, 8k level followed by a barber hone. For normal touch-up, just the barber hone on the yellow side.
I've always used mine with water. I'll try it dry the next time.
Guys, mine seems to be the brown side is coarser and the grey side is finer. Does this agree with your experience?
