I am also a 1/5/8 kinda guy. I find that jumping from 1k to 5k is perfectly fine. Although these days, I prefer using the Shapton pros all the way through or doing the Naniwa 1k, Shapton 5k, Shapton 12k (maybe followed by a finisher of choice)

When I started out, I bought the 2-5-8-12K Naniwas from SRD.
That actually worked out great, I was a bit worried about the 1K's aggressiveness, and decided to accept a bit more work when setting bevels.
Later I purchased the 1 K as well.
On the rare occasions that I use the SS nowadays, I find the 1-5-8-12K progression works very well.
I go 1-3-8, purely because Steve didn't have the 5k in stock when I ordered..! :)
I don't think it makes a huge amount of difference really, just personal preference. I don't think I'll bother getting the 5k as the 3k works great.
I use the Naniwa SS 1K-3K-8K progression, because it requires only two stones. (The 3K/8K is a combo.) Twenty laps at each stage and the edge is usually ready for a good natural finisher.

I do 1-2-5-8-12.
I really like the 2k in there.
how about 1-5-10 naniwa sequence ended with chrome pasted strop.
will that work, more importantly how easy will that be to hone for a newbie who is getting really enhusiastic about honing a couple or razors he bought?
