    Default Naniwa 3K or 5K???

I received my Chinese 12k the other day and I am expecting to receive my Naniwa 8K next week.

For a sharpening stone I am torn between the Naniwa 3K and 5k. Any suggestion which grit is more appropriate for a beginner like me???

I may have to do some bevel work in the future, for that I know I also need a 1K.

for bevel work you need 1k stone.
And to fill the gap to 8k you will need both 3k and 5k.

i have been using a 1k-3k-8k progression. I know lots of people are using the 1k-5k-8k progression.

I dont think there is a *need* to have both the 3k and 5k to compliment the 8k stone.

it just cuts the time spent on each stone. It can be done with either 3 or 5k for sure.

I normally use the 1K, 5K and then 8K followed by a finisher. For my every day honing, this set up works very well.

I also like 1 5 8 finisher, but 1 3 8 finisher or even 1 3 5 8 finisher will also work. I think having the 3 and the 5 is redundant though. As far as saving time on any given hone... well, I can do the exact same strokes/numbers if I go 1 3 8 or 1 5 8, so I don't think there is really anything to save there.

Since Lynn hasn't gotten back to you yet, I'd like to say that, if I remember correctly, Lynn does 10 strokes on the Naniwa 12k and then 10 laps on the hard wool felt with .5 diamond followed by 50 on the English Bridle. I'm not totally sure because that is the part of Lynn's routine that I have not stoled because I don't have the Naniwa 12k or .5 diamond spray.

    Thread revive!

I have read a lot of people recommend the 5k naniwa instead of the 3k, I was wondering why? A friend of mine asked me what naniwa set he should buy, the 3k/8k combo, or a 5k and 8k stand alone to complement a 1k and 12k naniwa. I only used the combo, so I don't know about the 5k. Does it have different feel, or why do you prefer the 5k over the 3k?

    banditpogi,

    1-3-8 for me

When I first got my Naniwa SSs I did use the (1), 3, 5, 8 (12) sequence. Now, for my daily razors, the (1)-3-8-(12) works just fine.

    Good honing !

    Have fun !

    Best regards

    Russ
