Hello Every body I am new to this forum so if I am doing anything wrong please let me know. l.o.l.
I just got this hone ( I was told it is Okudo Suita) and wonder what would be the best way to use it as final hone perhaps after Escher.
With Nagura , no Nagura , just water? etc.

Do you really think you need edge finer then escher you own?
i have honed a lot razors and never ever had any complaining about the edge .
i finish every single of them an Escher.
you may need to spend a little more time with Escher?

Strictly as a finishing stone use a diamond plate to create a light slurry. That way you are not introducing coarser particles from Nagura.
Okudo Suita can be finer than an Escher but also maybe not. Depends on the individual stones. You need to assess the scratch pattern of both of your own stones under magnification. Odds are they will be interchangeable as finishers but Suita are fast cutters & maybe a little more versatile. Have fun.
I agree that an escher could be all you need as its very keen but jnats can feel nicers to the skin so see what you think is better without being distracted by the mystique of the stone.
My jnat feels really nice on my face but my escher does feel sharper when shaving.
Could be just a preference thing!
Either way both hones take months of experience to get good at so take your time. I use nagura stones, make sure your last one is tomo nagura or use a dmt 325 plate to make mud.

Let me start by saying, Beautiful Hone!!
I use an Ohira suita as a final finisher and it is the best I have used out of all of the j-nat that I have previously owned.
As to its suitability to be a final polisher, you are going to have to put it through some honing tests. It might take a few weeks to find the time to do them all but afterwards you will have a good idea as to its overall suitability.
Try it without a slurry and lots of water. Try it wilth a spritz of water and hone nearly dry. Try it with a light slurry. Try it with a medium slurry. Try it with a heavy slurry. Try it with a slurry and hone until it gets thick, then water it down with a light spritz of water; repeat as many times as it needs to gain a uniform colour to the bevel.
I have found that my suita is as excellent a finisher as anyone can get. Have fun with it. Don't rush it and flub the results and get rid of it before you know what it is capable of.
I wouldn't use any Mikawa Nagura on it as the particles may not completely wash off (getting trapped in one of the 'su' pockets).
Oh so you are the lucky owner of that very rare stone, congrats.
As mentioned above test it well and soon enough you will find out if the stone is good for razors.
You can calibrate the test so to say by finishing your razor on a hone you know gives a very good edge, for example 8k norton, or 12k Super Stone or something else. For me I know that 12k Super Stone gives me almost the edge I like, so my test is to see if the stone can improve that edge. I use slurry, no slurry, dilution , etc until I find what works best, or if the stone just does not improve the edge.

Thank You for all the info. Just tried my stone tonight for the first time and I love it. Feels very nice, to be honest I never had such a smooth shave before. All I did is just use soap and water and my Wapi was very happy. Seems to me like the Escher/Okudo combination works very well so far.Thanks again.

Don't think that all Okudo suita cost that much though. That one (above pic) is very hard, fine, and large. But Okudo is the premier name in suita (you wouldn't know it next to the Nakayama one though). Enjoy yours if you have one.
those prices are killer..aren't they based mainly on weight though?
Ozuku , Okudo and Shobudani produce some of the hardest and finest stones.

and your whiskers. The only test is the shave test....

Wow! That is a gorgeous stone. Well you are most definitely a HAD enabler...
Aren't these stones usually used to final polish swords? I think escher and nakayama is fine eough lol

I would not use another stone on a suita. You can clog the Su with the grit from the other stone and not get the desired result.Quote:

If you are going to be using a piece of your own stone you will be fine. If the small stone is from another Okudo, and has grit that is not finer or the same as your stone then you will not get the best result.Quote:

I like the idea of diamond plate but was told that it might make scratches as well.
To be honest I am thinking about cutting a small piece of and make a slurry stone .
After all the stone is big enough to do the job ( honing razors) and at the end I will have a set up like we can see with vintage Escher in the box with the slurry stone.

I remember reading a post somewhere that if you make a slurry from a suita stone it is possible that chips will lodge in the holes and cause problems????

I was a little surprised to read that you might cut a piece of your Okudo stone to make up a slurry stone. There is a very good chance that in the near future you will regret doing so. These stones although dull, are gems in their own class and you should feel lucky to have found such a large stone to begin with. Cutting a stone is like cutting a piece of rope, you can never put it back together to be as strong or as long.
If you are really looking for a slurry on your stone that is made up of the stone, try sharpening a chisel or a kitchen knife on the stone with some heavy strokes, it will work up a slurry in with just a few strokes. Also you might just buy a 1 x 4 inch DMT diamond pocket stone for just a few bucks and just raise a bit of a slurry at a time on the stone where you are going to hone at.
In the long run though, in order to maintain the flatness of your beauty you will want to invest in an 8 x 3 diamond plate which can serve many purposes in you growing collection of razors and hones. I use one to to take out a deep frown in an edge, and then just rinse it off and use it to flatten a stone. Think of all of the glowing compliments you got about this stone right off the bat, please do not cut it up. regards, Alex

The part that makes it tough is those comments about the edge being smoother. I've gotta stop looking at these threads on Jnats. I still don't know what guys do about all the kanji characters stamped on the surface. Are these erased with the first use? Dang, I figure they must be about $200 each!
I hope to experience a jnat edge soon, courtesy of the honorable Riooso. 'Can't wait, but with some fear and trepidation. If it's that good, I'll be downtown with a sign: will work for jnats. Gulp.
