Is the hone garbage?
1000 Grit Slip Honing Stone - Shopsmith User - eBay (item 290498569910 end time Nov-17-10 05:37:10 PST)
There are several of them for sale at the same price. I just purchased a norton 4k/8k stone and a barbers hone earlier.
Would it be worth it to pick this up since it's so cheap? I bought a bunch of blades on ebay and would like to learn to restore them myself.

My advice would be to learn how to use these two before buying more stones..You can get a wonderful edge with what you've got IF you learn to use them. More hones won't help until you've mastered these, Good luck!
Sorry, jumped the gun a bit, you might want a 1k stone for complete restorations.. but I'd almost recommend working the other way... get sharp razors and learn to keep them sharp, then learn how to do a regular hone job, then go to the complete restoration. But there are plenty of roads to RomeLast edited by Del1r1um; 11-12-2010 at 01:45 AM.

i beleive the hone will have one flat side on the back (front) that is the entire area, so yes, good for hand honing. might break easy if dropped. but so cheap that if shipping isnt much i'd go for it. they may wear quickly if its soft (still giving you pleny of usage).. it might make sence to get two if the shipping is about the same.

I don't know a lot about honing but as a new guy to honing, setting the bevel has often been the most time consuming and tricky part of honing for me. I'd rather have a nice sized, reliable bevel setting stone than something that small. The Shapton 1k is what I'm using and it's not super expensive.

1k stones are usually pretty cheap so why not get a known qualety?
