Default Found a hone in my parents basement

It's a double sided synthetic hone. My initial feeling was the the finer side of the hone (which was greenish until I lapped it. It turned yellow after the lapping and that was the color of the slurry. The bottom part of the hone is dark brown. My wife feels that the finer side feels similar or finer than my Norton 8k and the coarser side feels similar to my 4k norton.

Now that it's lapped, it doesn't feel as smooth. It is now a yellowish color and doesn't feel as fine. It produces a yellow slurry. I sanded the yellow side a bit more on 2k wet/dry to bring some of the smoothness back to it. I think I'll continue to use the 2000 grit sandpaper to smooth it out a bit. I haven't touched the rough side of the hone.

I'm going to post pics in a sec.

Any thought? I know it'll be difficult without pics. Will this hone be useful for razors is my main question

I'll reserve judgement until I see the photos, but what are its dimensions?

When you get up to the 8k level, I don't think grit size can be assessed by feel. I also don't feel that is a barber hone. The dark side looks to be too coarse, but then that might just be accumulated oily residue. An easy way to clean it if there is still residue is to use oven cleaner.

Sorry for the poor pics. If you'd like pics of anything else or a closeup or something please let me know. It'd be great to find out which type of hone it is and if I could add it into my rotation.

Since it is a synthetic stone, Is there a way to establish grit rating? Unfortunately, it didn't come in a box of have any other information with it.

Oh oh, I found more information on the hone. On one side it says FINE on the other side it says INDIA.

Is this any India Oil Stone? How are they for razors. I get wayyyyyy to excited over this stuff.

Grit rating is irrelevant for barber hones, but if you have access to magnification, you can compare scratch patterns with hones of a known grit, such as your Nortons.

That's what I thought it looked like, but I would have sounded smarter if I had told you that before you wrote it. The fine side might be of a low enough grit for bevel setting, but I wouldn't use the back side unless you want a lot of practice removing scratches. Personally, I wouldn't use any of it on razors.

Yep! I have been here too! It looks like yours holds water! It runs and hides from mine. Great for knives! Oil it up!

    I rest my case.
