Norton 4k/8k Lapping

I lapped my Norton on the 8k side tonight, it's never been lapped. It took about 1 hour on 150 grit sandpaper! It was REALLY far from flat.

Any ideas on a finishing grit (600/1000/etc)? Necessary?

Ha! I had the same problem except I have a brand new Norton Flattening Stone that needed to be flattened and it took me a lot longer than 1 hour. The lapping stone is 250 grit and it leaves huge gouges, it looked like it needed finishing so I went to 400 then 600 and it turned out smooth. I'm new though so maybe I don't know what is best.

When I used silicon carbide paper, I went in the sequence 160 -320-600 'grit', and found the finish from the 600 'grit' excellent for use.

I now use a DMT325, and now leave it at that with no problems

The DMT 325 works on any stone and I'd recommend one.

Also it's the 4K side of the norton you need to worry about....that needs a LOT of lapping.

My norton 4/8k was flat within a few minutes on each side. I used 220g wet/dry on 12mm float glass. I noticed that the sandpaper was smooth within about 20 seconds, so changed them over for fresh sheets regularly. I finished with 600g. I'm a total newb at honing but I'm pretty sure it was flat as the greylead came off (twice, to be sure).

+1 on the DMT 325 it is a fantasic tool for much more than just lapping the stones...
