So, I figured this was the best place to bring this up. I ran across this image as an item up on u-pay marketed for sharpening straight razors. Never having heard of anything like this I thought maybe some of you guys might be able to shed some light on this.

Norton, Naniwa, Shaptons, PHIG, etc...now Marbles?
i have seen those and wondered about them also....
but i am fairly sure if they worked they would be plastered all over this place like the nortons/naniwas/coti's etc......
my money is on gimmick....
I've never heard of it, or even seen anything like it for razors or knives. I think I'd stick with regular old sharpening stones.
They are very common. What do you want to know about them?
Ive seen these things before, work like a barbers hone without flipping the blade, there is some truth to sharpening steel on glass, though I have not had the occasion to try these.
My girl friend uses those, but they aint for razors....wait, What?

Glass balls can straighten an edge the way
a butcher steel can straighten an edge.
I suspect they were hard to use correctly
or they would be more famous. The angle

Thanks for bringing this up, Jim. I had often wondered about them. Funny, it seems that the marbles in them all seem to be pristine. I suppose they either worked good, or not! They ARE kinda phallic, aren't they? :) ...get it on..Tom
