I realize a lot of you of have or had many finishing hones like myself. I tend to go to my J-nat the most after my coti.
What finishing hone do you go to the most?

I use a Jnat
B/G Escher, Charnely Forest, Coti.
Escher or Asagi.
I leave it up to the razor to chose :)
Mine is my Norton 8k. I've finished all my honing jobs on that one.
All 2 of them.
Most razors I finish on my PHIG(luckily got one of the top notch ones). On harder steels, such as American razors, I use a well loved, old surgical black Arkansas. Leaves an edge that would crumble on softer steels.:)
Escher Barber's Delight Y/G
Shapton 30.000 Glasstone. I love it!
Occassionaly I use 1µm diamond lapping film, an Ohzuku and a Shobudani. But nothing beats the feel of the 30k (disclaimer: personal preference!)
From left to right: 1k, 3k, 4k (grey), 6k (grey), 8k (grey), 16k, 30k

YG Escher or YG Thuringian. More recently I have been finishing on a Greican hone which I had initially overlooked, and I have been getting some wonderful edges of it.
BladeMen,
Naniwa 12k, Charnley Forest, gray Thuringian.
Have fun !
Best regards
Russ
PHIG every time...Haven't got anything else after that...I sort of feel somehow...Well...Good about that! I don't need anything else. I like the simple life. :)
Mick
Y/G Escher, any of my JNats, 10K Chosera, 13K Sigma or a 20K Gokumyo.
It all depends on mood and steel. All will do the job just fine..
Y/G Escher for some time now.
I have a vintage thuringian combo that has maxxed every blade that has come through my hands. I love this stone!
escher or jnat or thuringian depends on the razor i will try all three at frist shaveing right off the stone and go with the one that feels the best after that i strop on a strop treated with linde A and finish on a well used tony miller.
I go from a Naniwa 12k to a Salm to a Jnat to an Escher at the moment.
I have a few hones over 8k and they are all naturals. The harder the razor's steel is the harder the 'finisher' I use. If the finisher starts to create a slurry the hone is not hard enough for the razor.
I have hard water. it's all I ever need for my razors.:rofl2:
GS 30k, but I'm sure I'd be happy with the edge of the 16k, even the 8.
My TM linen strop with Dovo white paste is the real finisher.

Escher is great but nakayamy kita is very great
spyderco ultra-fine. have chromium oxide pasted paddle strop but I've been evaluating myself just off the stones for a while.
After the 8k, I have a PHIG I use with water that is the large hard one, so really 10-13k somewhere in that range, I (emphasize 'I') estimate it anyway. Then I have several very hard barber hones that are in that same range that I use dry. Then a lap on a .5 diamond felt paddle strop, then a .25 CrOx balsa paddle, the amount of laps on each varies according to what I see with a loupe. Then I strop at least 75 but as many as 100 laps on the Chestnut 'big daddy', then I finish on my 2" bridle leather for about 20-40 laps.
So far this hasn't failed me yet. Shines up the edge pretty darn smooth.
M
nakayama with mud and then with water. then on the strop 140x. otherwise it's too sharp
Shapton 16k (I thinK), I have no idea what I'm doing, really...
Final Edge:
Norton 8K
Naniwa 12K
Dry newspaper (WSJ) ;) on Naniwa stropping
Touch-up between honing:
CrO on balsa stropping OR dry newspaper on Naniwa stropping
3" Leather stropping
I have at least three finishers: 16K Shapton on glass, Brown Escher, and my J-Nat (Nakayama Maruichi). I gave my beautiful Coticule away(sob!) In my experience, there is not one finisher for all razors. Each razor will need a certain finisher to produce that ultimate edge for you. The trick is determining which finisher will be best for whatever razor you happen to be honing. Everybody has there favorites and I can't obviously answer your question. I suppose you will get many different answers from many of our honers here.
I use a microscope when honing. - I have experimented with different finishers, and yes, I can see a difference in the edge from razor to razor in regard to which finisher will produce the edge I am looking for. If you are looking for one, I couldn't answer that, but I bet Lynn could. He has used them all. The question would be, "Lynn, we are sending you to a desert island where you can hone all the razors you want for the rest of your life. - but you can only take one finisher with you. and what would that be?
Good Luck,
Steve
I've been finishing everything on a blue Thuringian; I've tried some finer grit natural and synthetic stones but prefer the edge I get off the Thuringian. To add context, all the razors I've honed are vintage/antique and are mostly Sheffields with a few Germans thrown in for good measure.
A dove grey soft Arkansas stone, cotton canvas & cowhide strops. ;)
Depends on which stone is winking at me that day: any of my coticules, big escher or jnats.
Lately I've liked my coticules.
i love my coti but i prefer cratan hone(around 15k) for finishing.
I only use my "welsh thuringian". Of course, it's the only finisher I have, so my choices are kinda limited. ;)
I have been using a vintage cuticle for all my razors, and either a nani 12k or thuringian for others blades.
For some reason i just prefer the cuticles edge personally.
i have been finishing a few on my fox 44 hone which is a Y/G Thuringian
It all depends on the razor and my mood.
Lately I have used my Okudo JNat a lot since it's the newest one in the stable and I'm getting to know it.
I'm starting to get quite a few different finishers after a couple fellow members (you know who you are!!!) triggered my HAD for real and all get their share of use, I like to try out the different finishers to see which suits what razor best.
