Naniwa Lapping plate
So I saw a post in a different thread (which I cant find to link to now) advising against getting the Naniwa lapping plate.....what are your alls thoughts on this? I asked for the set of Naniwa stones from SRD and want to know if I should just get a DMT b4 they come. Thanks!!

I never had one myself but a friend of mine did and he liked the more expensive of the two naniwa plates a lot. It is not a diamond plate IIRC. OTOH, I know first hand that the DMT D8C 325 continuous plate is probably all you'll ever need. Been using one for a few years and it is still going strong.

If I'm not mistaken, the Naniwa lapping plate is about the same as the Norton. They are waterstones themselves and need periodic maintenance, i.e. lapping. A DMT will pretty much need no maintenance at all.

I use the DMT325 on the Naniwa, Norton, and Shapton, also Swaty. Don't waste your money on a Norton or Naniwa lapping stone. They need lapped too. The DMT325 works very well on all of the above, never needs lapped and smooths with use making it even better on the high grit stones. If you get the DMT, I would lap all of your lower grit stones first to, as I call it, break it in and gentle it. Hope this will help, Howard

I can't see the text on the cover, the small print, but if it's the 8" 325grit, then it appears to be it. To be sure check the description at SRD to this one, but it looks to be correct. Regards, Howard

DMT D8C Continuous plate. They make an 'interrupted' plate and some guys use it. I've only used their continuous plates and if I'm not mistaken that is what most guys use around here.

Thanked: 2209I only use the DMT 325 for heavy duty lapping. I much prefer sandpaper for minor lapping and use a coarse stone for refreshing a hone surface between sessions. You really need to ask yourself just how much honing your going to be performing.
