Would you say that in most cases the side of a two sided hone that has the makers mark is the smoothest side? Are there any exceptions?

I haven't seen any... Doesn't mean they ain't out there, anytime you make a statement like that in this hobby I have found there will be an exception out there to prove it wrong :rofl2:
You should be able to feel the difference though either way, one a 2 sided Barber's hone or most other Sharpening stones
Thanks Glen, The only reason I asked is because I have a HSB hone OVB # 1000, that is two sided and when honing on it the side with the makers mark sounds gritty when using it and the other side doesn't.
Mack is there a distinct difference between the two sides, like two different colors ???
A pic is very helpful as usual :p
Yes, it is two shades of grey with the bottom side being the darkest, nearly black, but I don't have a camera. It got dropped.
