Thread: From statr to end with DTM1200 and a Swaty barbers hone

Hi,

I wonder if anybody has tried to hone a straight razor to be shave ready with a a minumum required of time and stones.

from start to end with:
DMT1200 - for setting bevel as quick as possible
Franz Swaty - for the rest with some kind of unicote method. its fast cutting and can be used dry, wet, liquid soap etc in circular and regular X-stroked

What do you think of it? Any experience?

It works, the only adjustment I would make is a different bevel setter, search out "One Stone Honing" on here... Lynn and I tested just about every finish stone/hone you can name including a Swaty..

One thing you have to realize if you use the One Stone method though is the the bevel set becomes much more citical to your success you want a very shallow cutter so that you don't have deep gouges in the metal to smooth out with just a finisher and nothing inbetween.. Honestly the DMT would be my last choice to use for this method..

What other fast cutting bevel stones is there? Sounds like naniwa superstone 1000 grit is recomended? I have a Nice untouched swaty.
I have never honed but would like to start. With small kids and busy Job time does matter, thats the reason for cheking Into this metod. I have about 60 Nice Swedish razors that i would like to hone someday..

Is the method u descibe in the other post applicqble for a sswaty? I dont Think i should create slurry on a swaty?

Yes you can use the Swaty, I used a Synthetic Nagura or Prep stone to create a slurry on my Swaty but I am sure many other slurry stones would work too..
I specifically used the King 1k in many of my experiments simply because they are pretty cheap in comparision to many of the other 1k's, and also locally available to many here, the best without any doubt in my mind is the Chosera 1k but it is also very expensive..
If your intention is all out speed then the Naniwa SS 1k is not the right choice it is a superior polishing stone but not a fast one ..

PS: Please understand that there are different types of slurry that we use when talking razors
the Swaty does not really produce a slurry so you have to use a softer than the base (swaty) stone, nagura/slurry stone to produce the slurry and aid in cutting power..

i am equally curious but was thinking DMT 8k as bevel setter to alleviate concerns about having too much cleanup after setting the bevel then moving straight to a natural finisher at first with slurry then without.

Sounds like chosera 1k is what is needed since its fast but also Smoth, and the later is needed for the one hone method.

Tuff choice there, either will work I feel the King leaves a very slightly smoother edge then the Norton, and the Norton is slightly faster, I guess really whichever you can get cheaper You might want to post this question in the "Nordic Region" subforum I bet the guys can point you better when it comes to ordering and prices then I can They might have info on getting any of these stones...
