Me first stone! Naniwa, Coti?

yes you can go from an 8k or 12k stone to a coticule.. its possible that the 12k will provide a keener edge then the coticule, and that while imparting smoothness you loose some keenness..
it is probably sufficient to go from 8k to coticule, impart some smoothness, and hopefully bump the keenness up.
in the end you should arrive at pretty-much or exactly the same thing, a coticule edge.
i think part of what you want to know is can you use the coticule without slurry after synthetics. the answer is yes, and different coticules will behave a little differently in how they finish on water. i hope jarrod would be able to pick out a good one for that purpose.

Skip either the 12K or the coticule.
One won't add anything after the other.

Okie dokes folks. Been talking to Jarrod literally all day (while at work slacking off when I should have been working ;P) and finally came down to a La Grise combo stone. I will also be ordering the 3k/8k naniwa combo stone to start on, and work my way up to finishing on the coti after consisten 8k shaves.

As far as bevel setting, I know a good 1k aren't very pricey, but how long would it take to bevel set on my BBW side, or say my 3k naniwa???

(P.s. will I be able to use the BBW side for anything other than kitchen knives??? Lol

You will get some very smooth edges from the LG. They are a nice and soft stone. I have a LG bout and you can defiantly tell a difference between it and my other vintage coticules.

For bevel setting a Chosera 1k is money well spent. If you're planning on setting a bevel on a bbw bring your lunch.

Between a coticule and a naniwa 12k, the best choice would be to flip a coin. They re both superb finishers, the naniwa is easier, but the coticule with a little more or less slurry can offer you many "grit choices". For lapping plate, just buy two sheets of sandpaper 100 grit, and another 2 of 500 grit. Mark your stone with a pencil, lap it, and you will be fine. If you ve got HAD, that's another matter, but, for one or two razors, you don't need 5 hones and a lapping plate. A coticule and a slurry stone is all you need. If you have 10s of razors, yes, you will need more than one hones, it's time consuming. But for small numbers, you don't need them.
