Hey
The only place you can buy norton stones in Australia is Lie-Nielsen toolworks.
Lie-Nielsen Toolworks Australia | Home
I could not see if they deliver to NZ. However if you contact them I am sure they could work something out for you!!
Of course this is if you dont find anything locally that is.
Good luck
Cheers I will keep it in mind
To be honest your best bet would be to do what the rest of us Antipodeans do when it comes to razor-friendly stones: try to fluke a lucky snag in antiques stores or estate sales etc, or order from overseas and get them shipped. That's not to say you won't find anything locally, but if you are getting into restorative honing and so on it is very unlikely you'll find stones that specialised in a bricks and mortar down here.
James.
Another option if nothing's available locally is toolsfromjapan.com. He's got the usual suspects (Shapton, Naniwa) and the Sigma Power stones, which are very well regarded amongst the woodworking folk but not well known to us razor types.
For some reason, it seems less crazy to me to ship stones from Japan to NZ than from Japan to the US, though it's probably about the same distance. Time zones or something.
I just found some Norton Waterstones on trademe.co.nz of all places! http://www.trademe.co.nz/sports/hunt...-476869926.htm $209 nzd plus $7 courier is that a OK price to pay ?
Naniwa or norton stone?
Both have their adherents, both are fine stones. Nortons have a longer history here than the Naniwas, but I don't think that matters a lot. I think you'd be happy with either.
James.
I have decided to go with Norton WaterStone 3 Piece Set $134.99usd, Naniwa Super Stone 12000 Grit in Stand $71.99usd & Mitchell's Wool Fat Shaving Dish and Soap hehehe $49.99usd total including shipping = 328.27 USD = 437.159 NZD
Now just the Norton 3 piece is $134.99 USD = $179.570 NZD, but shipping is $71.30 USD = $94.9835 NZD which still ends up cheaper cause I am getting a three piece set for less than the one stone at $209nzd
Just to update this thread for any other kiwis floating around, I've struggled to find a decently priced Norton or Naniwa around the place, or on any NZ online store. Just ordered a Naniwa combo through SRD and even with postage and duty the price is far better than local rates.
At the risk of being howled down 330_mate on EBay has Naniwas at a very competitive price and low delivery a well
SRD is the best, brought mine through there in the end. PM me if your wanting honing done in NZ
This is the second thread I have seen with a Kiwi having a hard time finding stones. The options they do have is crazy expensive shipping wise. I am thinking maybe there is an open market here waiting to be filled by a bold Kiwi shaver.
The problem is that there's probably only about 9 people in NZ who know what a straight razor is, let alone shave with one:) Similar issue here; I reckon there's about a dozen straight shavers in QLD out of a population of 5m. If you extrapolate that ratio to the whole of Australia it means there are less than 60 blokes using a straight. Not much of a market.
On second thought, you could probably multiply my figures by 2 or 3 to account for guys who use straights but aren't on SRP.
I'd welcome other opinions :hmmm:
Probably a fairly limited market. Our population is a mere 4 million. International shipping really has gone through the roof over the last 2 years. Having said that, still cheaper than local prices. Maybe worth considering approaching Lynn about a group buy if there is enough interest. I have been looking at the Norton 4000/8000 combo now for 18 months or so. I used to be indecisive, but now I am not
so sure.
Can't speak to the obtaining and shipping of stones to NZ but can comment on the stones. Norton 4/8k is a fine workhorse of a stone. Looked far and wide and bought from Amazon. Now they just act as a go between customer and supplier but I'm wondering what kind of a deal they have with the mfgrs/suppliers because I got my stone for less than the maker's price in their catalog. Coupled the 4/8k with a King 1k for bevel setting and a DMT 325 for lapping and rough work. Finishing stones later after I get consistently good shaving edges off the 8k side.
I would do the group buy with SRD and then do local shipping to get everyone what they need. The only problem there is the whole trust issue. I have read very little on here about guys getting burned, but it has happened.
For anyone in NZ interested in shipping to NZ this is an example of what I brought and what the shipping was:
1 x Straight Razor Designs Lynn Abrams Modular Paddle (819) = $89.99
1 x Naniwa Super Stone 1000 Grit in Stand (473) = $32.99
1 x Naniwa Value Pack - 5000, 8000 & 12000 Grit Stones (1882) = $173.99
1 x Norton WaterStone Combo 4000/8000 Grit (487) = $78.99
1 x Norton WaterStone Combo 220/1000 Grit (486) = $37.99
1 x DMT 8" Dia-Sharp Continuous Diamond Coarse - 325 (218) = $46.99
------------------------------------------------------
Sub-Total: $460.94
United States Postal Service (1 Boxes) (17 lbs, 12 oz) (Priority Mail
International®): $109.49
Total: $570.4
Prices were pretty dam good (some say you might get cheaper on ebay but you WONT get all of those with combined shipping)
I looked and it was hard to find someone selling all the same brand and nobody had all brands to combine if you know what I mean
Nice Don, how long was delivery?
Plus SRD is gonna back those products and make sure you're happy. When I buy on the bay I assume I'm never gonna get anything else outta that seller customer service wise. SRD has great customer service.
Will let you know when they arrive
Ordered on June 24th, shipped 25th and received a letter from NZ Post saying customs has my package pending for release on the 04th July ( dam customs I think it was because it was addressed to my business name and now I have to tell them its personal items not for sale etc)
Nice, did customs shaft you for GST?
Have not got back to them yet waiting for monday. Keep ringing them but they have not processed it yet
Customs charged me $134.47 NZD tax to release them even know they are personal items
Been down that road, anything over $300 you pay, the only way to avoid that one was to split it into 2 packages.
They said anything over 400. In saying that I have imported plenty of stuff over that and never had any problems. Some of them firearm parts and not been held
You can now get Coticule stones and Belgium blue stones in NZ. $189 for a coti on tm
