how durable are the nanawa stones,i hopefully will be getting a 1/3k and a 8k from santa.
the reson i ask is i would like to use the 1/3k on my hunting/bushcraft knives,but if there is any chance i could wreck the stone i will not bother and stick to the spyderco

While the naniwa superstones seem to have an ideal feel when it comes to honing razors I'm pretty sure they were made mainly for honing tools. Plane blades and chisels and the like. So I would think they would stand up well under knife honing. I would suggest doing a search on knife forums and see if there is any feedback on the naniwas. Unless you're sharpening a slue of knives I think it would be fine. Of course lapping before a razor honing session would be advisable but that is a good idea anyway.
Naniwas are nice for knives too, but they load up fast, and you can gouge them with bad technique and too much pressure. If you like your spydercos, than maybe you won't like the nanis for knives.
i was intending to do the brunt of the work on the spyderco then finish on the naniwa 1/3
i also understand it is always about feel with stones,so i will leave it until i can feel the difference
Which spyderco stones do you have? The brown one in my opinion is about as fine as a 3k Naniwa, the fine and ultra fine are much finer than the 1/3k Naniwa.Quote:

I really like the Arkansas stones for knife sharpening. I just got done doing my pocket knife, and you can shave with it......:D
