I would love to know what this stone is. It feels like a higher grit above 8k but I am not experienced enough to know. Attachment 117860

Hard to say from just one photo but if the stone is very hard it looks like a Black Arkansas to me.
Do you need closer pics? Back side? Let me know.
Typically, those of us who guess like to get a side, top, and end view of the stone. Preferably taken in macro, in daylight sun. Slurried, wet, and dry.
It appears to be see through, perhaps some kind of synthetic glass hone?
I cant see through it. It is black and I see no light through the middle. Is this good or bad stone?
It could be a black Arkansas stone, or it could be a slate stone. Either one is an acceptable stone to use, but it is only BY using it that you will be able to determine where in a honing progression it belongs (if anywhere)
I see. It feels higher grit like 8k or better.
Do you use water or oil? I never used either style stones.

In this picture I can see through the top. Try wetting both sides and then check if you can look through it.
is the stone all black i think i can see some grey spec's on the side of the stone and how hard is the stone can you scratch the stone with a nail ?
can you post some pic's of the box and the stone wet ?
It almost looks like a marble tile that I used to lap stones before I got my DMT, but my experience with stones is limited.
Yep..not a clue. If I was forced to guess, I'd guess that it's a piece of tinted glass. But it doesn't look like glass from the side view...There it looks like ceramic. And in the top view pic I'd also guess ceramic. And in another view, I'd guess floor tile. Guess you're just gonna have to learn to hone, and then use it and tell us if it was any good or not. :)
It actually looks like black granite to me. Very similar to surface plates used in machine shops. Could be a black granite lapping plate.https://www.google.com/search?q=blac...DIfa0QGAloD4Cg
After taking a closer look at the photo where you can see through it, I am going to have to change my vote to glass hone plate!
Compare it with you other hone first. Otherwise this is just guess work. It could be glass hone, translucent ark, manmade hone .... Does it slurry easily, does clurry improvec honing, what colour is the slurry, does it smell of something?
Scratched glass plate
It didnt slurry I no smell.
Could it be a jewelers gold testing stone? Is there a difference? Can you use a jewelers stone to hone with?
Slate good? it fels like glass.
Slate can be really good, but whatever it is go try it and tell us how it is!
Here's an old thread about another glass hone for reference.
