Yes but the more you rub the more material comes off. Eventually you will get a pile which will make thick slurry. It may just take longer. The only reason otherwise is if the material from the hone is coming off in very coarse pieces which would be a function of how coarse the lapping plate is and the integrity of your hone.
No worries, just use a soft thuringian rubbing stone.
