Grit of Aloxite Hone by The Carborundum Co?

Would anyone happen to know the grit of an aloxite hone that I have that's manufactured by The Carborundum Company?

Would anyone have any idea how to lap an aloxite/aluminum oxide hone? It's incredibly hard, ~9 on the Mohs scale. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I lap barber hones together, your is probably in the neighborhood of 9k. I apply lather to my barber hones to get them as slow as possible, but they are good wet too. Have fun.

BTW, barber hones are often flat enough to hone without lapping. They are harder than ordinary water hones.

Thanks for your response. Mine was completely flat, but it had pock marks in it. The only way I could get rid of them was by using a 3M pad since it ground sandpaper off all together. The pockmarks are gone, but do you have any ideas on how I could restore it to its former glassy finish?

I lapped an aloxite stone and an ole pike (norton) Krystalon on my notrton lapping stone... it took a good while but i eventoaully got them flat. It also took some time to clean the lapping stone afterwards.

as far as getting that smooth shiny look / feel back just hone a few ebay specials and it will be back.

Thanks, I'll see if I can get my hands on the flattening stone. Was your aloxite pretty aggressive? Mine puts a nice edge on a dull razor within about 5 round trip passes or so, but I kept getting somewhat mixed results with my razors due to the pock marks.

Wow, thats fast! I need to use shaving lather on every barber hone I've ever used to slow it down. Do you mean it refreshes the edge with 5-6 laps, thats normal. But it brings up a dull razor that fast?

Heh heh. Sorry, I meant that it refreshes a slightly dull edge within those passes to shaving sharp.
