Is it flat? Am I crazy?
Recently I feel as though my honing skills are improving. I'm really getting to know the meaning of flat and how it feels. For lapping I use the Norton Flattening Stone on my 1k and 4k. 8k and above get flattened by an Atoma diamond plate. For some reason I could swear that my 1k and 4k aren't getting flat with the NFS. I use a pencil to make a grid and lap a time or two. The surface feels high in the center (almost tubular). The blade will actually rock a little while laying on the hone. When I get to my 8k lapped by the Atoma it feels as flat as can be. Am I crazy? Is the NFS to blame? Maybe it's my techinque.

When was the last time you lapped the lapper ?

Can you lap your 1K and 4K with the Atoma? TBH, I haven't touched my notron flattening stone since I got my DMT lapping plate.

I would use the diamond plate on the 1k and 4k too. The norton lapping stone usually isn't flat when its new and needs to be lapped often. If that is first time honing that particular razor it could be the razor. Might need to try a different stroke, but I would make sure your stones are flat first.

I used to do mine on a piece of glass and some wet dry. 220g if I recall. Some guys curse the Norton lappper but I had no problems with mine.

Matt, I'm pretty sure I can lap the 1/4k with the Atoma. I was thinking that maybe unnecessary wear and tear on the diamond plate.

I've been using a modified stroke to compensate for the surface. Lapping the lapper may be next.

I would make sure that your NFS is flat. That might be causing your problem.
