Sweet and simple would the Pyramid used with a Norton 4/8k grit be the exact same with a waterstone with 3/8k grit? I've already bought it as it was a great deal. Not easy getting affordable waterstones in Canada. Just wanted to know for when it arrives. Thanks in advance.
Take it you may have got the naniwa 3/8 then. Shouldn't be any different same as you could use 5&8 etc.
Give it a try. Worse that can happen is you need something in between, or it may be fine. :gl:

As a guess irt should work the same. I haven't tried the pyramid method but do go from a 3K Nani to an 8K Nani with nothing in between

The pyramids work by sneaking up on the edge--sort of a two steps forward one step back, but it still should get you there.
Otherwise you can chuck the 3-8k pyramid and do the more important 1k-1k pyramid, BUT THIS SHOULD ONLY BE DONE AFTER YOU ARE CERTAIN THAT YOUR BEVEL IS SET...
1k-1K pyramid:
Strokes on 1k.....Strokes on 1k
.........10....................10
..........5......................5
..........3......................3
..........1......................3
..........1......................5
This pyramid will help to ensure that your bevel is fully set. If still in doubt, you can do a more aggressive pyramid that would start with a higher stroke count. Let me know if you need the numbers for this as the sequence between the 1k and the 1k is critical for a good bevel.
After completing this 1k-1k pyramid, you can just do 20-30 circles followed by 10 light x-strokes on the 3k, followed by 10-15 light x-strokes on the 8k.

The lame point was a variation on the oft mentioned theme of the bevel set being 90 percent of the honing. After you THINK you have the bevel set it wouldn't hurt to do a little more with this lame "pyramid" of mine. So many people used to get hung up on the exact numbers of the pyramid when the main thing it accomplished was more time on the 4k to finish off the bevel.
Should work, just concentrate on getting lighter and lighter on the lower grit meaning that it is acting as a slightly higher grit stone. At the end of the day so long as the scratch marks from the lower grit are removed by the higher grit, mission accomplished.
