3/8k Pyramid same as 4/8k?
Sweet and simple would the Pyramid used with a Norton 4/8k grit be the exact same with a waterstone with 3/8k grit? I've already bought it as it was a great deal. Not easy getting affordable waterstones in Canada. Just wanted to know for when it arrives. Thanks in advance.

Take it you may have got the naniwa 3/8 then. Shouldn't be any different same as you could use 5&8 etc.

Give it a try. Worse that can happen is you need something in between, or it may be fine.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

Thanked: 3795The pyramids work by sneaking up on the edge--sort of a two steps forward one step back, but it still should get you there.
Otherwise you can chuck the 3-8k pyramid and do the more important 1k-1k pyramid, BUT THIS SHOULD ONLY BE DONE AFTER YOU ARE CERTAIN THAT YOUR BEVEL IS SET...
1k-1K pyramid:
Strokes on 1k.....Strokes on 1k
.........10....................10
..........5......................5
..........3......................3
..........1......................3
..........1......................5
This pyramid will help to ensure that your bevel is fully set. If still in doubt, you can do a more aggressive pyramid that would start with a higher stroke count. Let me know if you need the numbers for this as the sequence between the 1k and the 1k is critical for a good bevel.
After completing this 1k-1k pyramid, you can just do 20-30 circles followed by 10 light x-strokes on the 3k, followed by 10-15 light x-strokes on the 8k.Last edited by Utopian; 12-30-2014 at 03:32 PM.

Not following what you just laid down lol. Wouldn't that just be 20 strokes, 10 strokes etc down to 6 strokes on a 1k hone. My bevel is fully set I have magic marker'd it. Looked at reflections, looked under magnification and shaved arm hair easily which lets me know my bevel is set. Why would one do the 1k-1k after setting the bevel? I don't understand. Circles on this particular razor are out of the question as it is a smiling edge and I'm trying to master the rolling x stroke. .. hmm not an easy one

I studied Ron's 'pyramid' with interest. Call it what you want, I'm not putting words in Ron's mouth and then quoting him, but I think the idea is to give a newer honer a program to follow. One of the benefits of pyramid honing is that it is by the numbers, and gives you a starting and ending point. Knowing when to stop at a particular grit is one of the problems that new honers have. The pyramid assigns parameters that eliminate the ambiguity.
The TNT, TPT, tree topping arm or leg hair, can give an indication as to where we are, whether we need to repeat the same pyramid, or an abbreviated one. Bottom line, it just gives a step by step plan rather than leaving us on our own as it were.Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.
