After honing a razor for the first time when you shave with it how many razors do you take to the sink. When I hone a razor and the first time I start to shave with it I take another one to the sink with it. if for some reason my honing isn't quite up to snuff I have one right there to finish with. just wondering if i'm the only one that does this.
I always take two razors, if one is not shaving well I'll switch to the other.
When I am at work I hone in the bathroom so sometimes I test shave and go back to the finish hone, at home I hone in the kitchen so when I go for a test shave at home I usually have a backup handy.
It is weird, that! Sometimes if I am unsure of one, I will strop a known-good for quick backup. Never fails the ones which might fail will be ones I was certain of and did not strop a backup. In that case, standing there all in a lather, I just grab one and shave.
Never a DE, though. I like to compare one which is right to the one which came up short. It seems to tell me what the course of action will be. Like: 'How bad can it be? OH! THAT bad!' ! :rofl2:

I keep at least a Coticule and a blue/green Thuringian at the sink in the bathroom. I often may hone more than one razor and they go there to be shave tested. Usually my technique is good enough that I do not need a back up or I may add a couple strokes to my blade. I have a couple pasted strops and other hanging strops. And I have tape and a scissors nearby.
Within easy reach there are usually about 50+ blades that i have already tested and may easily shave with. Nice to live alone!

If shave testing, I take all I am testing ( have done up to 6 In 1 hit ) and a known backup
if all fail the back up is used to finish and the failures go back to the for honing list for touch as required
I only take the one I have just honed.
However the apartment I live in is not exactly huge, so I'm not actually more than 10 paces away from another razor.

I keep a 7 day set in the medicine cabinet. If a razors fails the test I just grab 1 of my regulars, strop and go. I never set up for failure. A self inflicted punishment maybe but it makes me more determined to do it right the first time.
I just take one.
If its one ive just honed then I will take a back up otherwise just one.
since i'm still a noob i always take a back up. too much hassle to walk through the living room to get my hones. SWMBO thinks i spend too much time shaving anyway.(on a side note, i had a successful first hone attempt last night on a Clauss razor: YES!)
The more you hone razors, the better you get, if you are doing it right. My attrition rate has fallen way down, but on occasion any one razor will disappoint and need another trip to the hones. If anyone says they are 100 percent successful 100 percent of the time, they may kid themselves, but not me! ;) Even if a razor is 'close', I put it down and grab another.
No fun shaving with one which is 'close' to perfect, IMO. YMMV
Just the one. Usually good enough to get through the shave even if it's not perfect. If I really missed the mark honing, I will go grab another from the cabinet in the closet which is just around the corner.
One hone, one shave, lol. (One shot, one kill :gaah: haha). I normally only take one razor but if I'm testing several new stones I might have up to four razors and divide my beard up into quadrants to test them.
Two. They are always in the bathroom.
I use one until it needs to be honed.
Once it doesn't shave like I want I hone it or I either send it out for honing and switch to the other.
But, I'm a Newb learning all the time

Have 12 sitting in a case on the sinktop. Never had to swap in midstream though as when I finish using a blade that's lacking, it gets honed within a day or 2 and replaced back in the case.
I only take one razor. After I complete my shave and get everything put away, my last step is to strop the razor on the linen for twenty laps and forty on the leather. I never fold my razor completely back into the scales until the next day. I allow any water inside the scales to evaporate. Before I shave, I alway complete forty laps on the leather. This process works well for me. I'm happy with the results .
I'm usually pretty sure a razor is good after honing but if not I'll finish with a DE or SE
Usually i shave only with one Razor, but when i hone a razor and its getting late in the night when i finish it, i usually have a second razor beside the one ive honed in the night laying in the bath because it happened (about three or four times) that those midnight Razors didnt worked very well, concentration loss isnt a good partner during a honing session.
Best solution is to hone several razors & take them all for a test. Odds are you'll get a good shave... ;)
One. If it comes up short.....I stop and go back to the hones and strop. Of course that's when I'm not rushed for time, like having to be ready by noon or so!!
Being retired isn't all bad. :D

On a freshly honed razor I just shave with that edge, the whole shave, and always with the same exact prep and soap. I want an evaluation of how that edge feels to shave with and how my face will feel post shave, as well as one hour post shave.
For me this is all important information. If I need to take the razor back to the stones then I know for sure what I had in the initial honing and then when I re-evaluate the edge I know what results I attained in the re-hone.
This process gives me consistent test results and helps me to evaluate the edges more completely. Since I know I will be shaving with this edge it also encourages me not to take short cuts and to be patient making sure each stage in honing is complete.
most the time i take 1 .. i have taken 2 or 3 before ...i like Geezer's idea of keeping a coti or thuri in there though , as i do still run across those blades where i get close but not close enough and just need some more finish strokes and i dont shave but 2-3 times a week so i gotta get them test in when i can .. but if i take one and it fails i reach in the cabinet and grab my DE and finish then write my results in my hone log incase i dont get around to the hones any time soon ..
Only 1 for me, I usually know when a razor is on it's last shave. There's a point when a razor is pulling a little and then there's a point when it's tugging. I usually keep 5 or 6 razors ready, the longer the period each razor has between shaves the better the razor IMHO.

I always have a few at the sink side but go through phases - shave with one for a few shaves then switch it up. I'm always pretty sure a razor is going to be shave ready after I hone it and strop it to death to mellow it out - if it's silently dropping arm hairs high up, it's usually ready. I do the same thing with cream/soaps - use a different one every day if I can... but now that I have my hands on some new XPec, I'll think I'll be using that for a while...

I almost never have to resort to a backup for a fresh hone job...but if I do, there are usually 26 proven performers, stropped and ready, within an arm's reach.
If it's a first shave after a hone, I take a backup. Otherwise, only one.
