Shaved Off My 1000

Was working on my practice razor, again and was having a little trouble with getting the bevel set. Just was not sure if it was there yet or not. My tests were inconclusive but the bevel looked really good and it was shaving wet arm hair like nothing.

I decided, with some prompting from a friend, to try to shave with it. In the back of my mind, I was thinking no way. But I tried it and it really shaved well. Would I like to shave with it every day in that condition, no.

But it shaved very well.

I am using Naniwa Super Stones; 1000, 5000, 8000 and 12000 but I have a 3000 ordered, that should arrive on Monday, so I will wait to proceed until then.

Just can't get over how well it shaved off of the 1000. Never thought that would work.

I've got the same progression with a 3 instead of the 5 (something else to buy). I've noticed a good bevel on 1k would shave arm hair well but after the 3k there is some reduction in the aggressiveness of the edge. I put it down to the saw like edge of the 1k bevel grabbing the hair.

I did an experiment one time with a difficult razor. I took my 1K hone to the bathroom and after I thought the bevel was set, I tried to shave, a little more on the 1K and then another test, one more time and it was a shave-able edge, again it felt quite coarse and I'm sure would not have been a great full shave but it was a lesson. I examined the edge once I was able to shave and etched that visual into my memory.

Been there done that. Won't do it again unless I have completely lost it. I think every guy that is learning to hone should try it once. The bevel set is the foundation and if it's right and only if it's right will you be able to evaluate your skill at the end of what ever progression you have. I also shaved off the 8k for a year before I moved up in grit. This didn't hurt either.

I'm with Rez and Pups in that Everyone that is learning to hone should see what the edge 'feels like' off of a 1K. But Don't Stop There!

When I was learning to hone, I decided to see what exactly was going on with Not Only the Hones, But Stropping! SO, I did a small test shave right off of the 1K that I knew was 'set' then stropped and repeated.

I did the same experiment on the 4K and 8K. It was a Real Learning Experience!! And I Highly Recommend it to Anyone Learning to Hone

While these days I usually go to a higher grit hone after the 8K, I've said it time and time again:

If I were to drop my Naniwa 12K or any other higher grit hone I could live off of my Norton 8K edge for the rest of my life.

However; If I were do drop and break my Norton 4/8K I'd eat peanut butter sandwiched day in and day out until I could afford to purchase another one!

If you learn to get a Clean, Close and Comfortable shave off of an 8k hone then you will have something to judge your higher grit hones edges from.

I am planning on test shaving with this again after the 3k, 5k, 8k and of course after completion with the 12k. Probably slow me down quite a bit on finishing it this time but I think it will be worth it, to actually feel the difference on my face after each step.

Take your time on each hone/it's not a race!!! Take the time to evaluate each stage and learn from them

Shaving off 1 3 and 5 K is a lifetime experience Iv shaved off 6 k once and from 8 k twice . I guess im not man enought .
Watever you do dont shave off 600 or 800 - it will be a more of a tattoo , rather than a shave .

RusenBG . It's more about being able to have a nice shave at 8k by proper honing. The key word here is nice. Have you spoiled yourself or do you just think you have :<0)

I didnot understand that . Yess i have a nice shave off my Taidea 8 K , but just can stop my self going on the finer stone , after 8 K . It is just some maniac chassing of the perfect edge . Its not good at all , just whan you have thury or a black jasper , you canot run from honing on it .
