Naniwa 5K Pro series

Do any of you have this one and if so how do you keep it wet. Mine dries out very quickly when I am honing. This is the 5000 k Professional slate grey in color

I have the 3k. I just dip razor in a mug of water for a drip or two whenever it begins to dry out. But others use spray bottles which is probably a better idea.

Yes, I use a spray bottle also but it soaks in as fast as I put it on

Sounds thirstier than the 3k. Sure someone who has it will chime in soon. Have seen a few people recommend a very short soak, five minutes I think. Ttoo much and the Naniwas apparently crack.

Squirt bottle, like for Catsup, BBQ sauce or old Shampoo bottle and a plastic fast food tray or baking sheet to catch the runoff.

I think in one of Gssixgun's videos he soaks them one at a time, the 3k while he's using the 1k, the 5k while he's using the 3k, etc. Spray bottle has worked fine for me, and sometimes I spray after every 10 strokes or after each group of circles.

Honestly I soak mine for about 10 minutes before I start honing and keep it wet throughout the session with added water as I hone each razor...

Honing a Knife or Tool is different from honing a Razor (wow I know what a concept) most of the info on most of the Manufactures and Vendors sites come from the Knife & Tools side of the equation, therefore I take it all with a very large grain of salt and forge ahead with learning each hone/stone from a SR point of view...

Honing a SR is (normally) better accomplished with a "Wetter" "Slicker" surface, so do what you must to attain that surface


All that being said I would be reluctant to soak the 5k hone too long, way to expensive to mess up those hones I tend to hone with a "Well" of water rather then a Spray bottle next to the hones so it is rather easy to dip my fingers in and dribble more water on the surface of the hones it is also easier to dip the razor in and use that to very precisely dilute slurry...

ie: I like the "Well" of water


Definition of a "Well" = A big Tupperware container that easily holds 1 Gallon of water with room to spare when soaking a hone or dipping a razor

I just use a "Smart Water" water bottle with one of those sports flip top caps for just a small splash of water, or a "real lemon" or lime bottle with also a flip top cap. Easier for me rather than a squirt/spray bottle, because of wetting everything else around with the splash/mist.

Yea, I too soak them all. I keep a plastic shoe box in the sink filled with cold clean water and put them all in, on edge, as I get my gear together and tape a razor.

Then as I finish with each stone, I stand it on end in the sink to drain after lapping it fresh.

Then in rotation next stone goes in to the water as I am using the previous stone, so they are well soaked. I use a mix of stones, Naniwa, Norton, and Nubatama & Suehiro Gokumyo.

I think were folks have issues is with drying, I let them dry slowly on end in the sink, no sun, no blotting, and no storing in water, some stones cannot take storing in water and no soap for synthetics.
