Horse meet water, please drink in the knowledge
Just realized that I am using an "Americanism" just in case it is lost in translation it means that the answer is right there in front of you, but you are refusing to acknowledge it :p Promise Seriously
Water yuck make it a beer.
Excellent point, Glen. Thanks for that. Fortunately, I took the wisdom of your signature to heart several years ago. 8? 9? I forget. Either way, several hundreds of razors later, I could not agree more. The knowledge to be gained from one Coticule (or, as you put it, "Stone") cannot be underestimated.
So, thanks!
Very respectfully,
Horse
I've been away for a while, but, unless I'm hallucinating, some posts mentioned leaving tape on a razor for weeks?!? Why do you do that?
I replace it between stones if it shows any wear, and remove it when done honing a razor (40 minutes, max).
No objections there prost!
I depend on the HHT for determining that the razor is shave ready to my standards. By the chart Pithor provided it is an HHT5 that I look for. When I was first coming around here there were some guys who promoted the HHT, and others who didn't find it necessary. Different strokes for different folks, then and now.
When I was first trying to achieve HHT, and failing, I figured it was my extremely fine hair. One day, trying and failing, I grabbed a used DE blade that was laying on the countertop. What my straight razor couldn't do the used up DE blade did with no problem, on my extremely fine hair.
So I knew it wasn't the hair. I kept working at honing and finally got 'there'. Of course the object is to get a DFS, so if HHT isn't your huckleberry ....... whatever works for you. Like most things in this sport ....... YMMV.
