So I recently purchased the dovo micarta ice tempered... Beautiful blade and I was curious to look at it under the scope with the factory edge and I came across this... Pic below... Now I have no idea what it is or how it got there but it almost looks like the steel is bent like folding... I would say something hit it but u would think that would be one fold... I honed her and its gone now but I had to take a picture and share with you guys

That is why I don't use that much magnification, I'd see too many things that would bother me. Out of curiosity how were the shaves just before you noticed this under magnification. I mean did the quality of the shave make you go checking the edge?

It’s a chip, yea, it hit something.
Just because you don’t see it, does not make it go away. Something that big you will feel and probably cut you, its half the width of the bevel.
And that’s not a factory edge, note the diagonal stria on the bevel. It’s been stropped.
I wasn't inferring that because you don't see it that it goes away but it just may not bother you when you shave. It is about 1/3 the bevel and even on a small bevel might be visible with the naked eye and a 20x hand loupe for sure. I was curious what prompted the OP to check the blade under magnification. Was it because of poor shave quality or was it just to see whats what?Quote:

The “What, I can’t see won’t hurt me” crowd, It’s not about the magnification it is about interpreting what you see, and determining the cause and the solution. Too much knowledge is never a bad thing.
That’s a big chip no matter how you measure it…
Most of the new guy,”I have a problem with my edge” post, can easily be solved, by looking at the edge with magnification. They will find a serrated edge, figuring out how that happened is the first step in fixing it. Edges don’t fall apart, on their own.
Small chips turn into large chips, are uncomfortable and more importantly are early warning sign of a problem, often proper stropping or a light touch up can fix them. Or they are indicators of a technique issue.
It kills me that new guys will spend hundreds of dollars on stones and not spend two bucks on good lighted magnification.
The OP is a new honer, looking to learn, telling him don’t worry about it is not the right answer. End of rant… carry on…
Again, I most emphatically did not tell him to not worry about it. Can you get that! Yes, I use a hand loupe and so far so good. Any magnification is not going to do you much good if you don't know what you are looking at for sure. Posting a photo of the edge is a great idea too, no doubt of that either. Yes, the edge has likely been dinged. I am still curious as to what prompted the OP to take a closer look at the edge in the first place. Was it shaving badly or not, did the blade leave marks on the strop from the ding? That sort of thing.Quote:

All I’m saying is for a new guy the best bang for their buck is magnification, they will learn more from looking at edges, than they will doing countless laps on high dollar hones.
There are those that don’t need to look at an edge through magnification to tell what is happening at an edge and if it works for them, great. But they are not new guys…

According to the dovo commercial they strop and HHT every edge before boxing. Looks almost like a burr made possibly from the spinning hone they used. Ah whatever it's big enough to hurt your skin. relatively big compared to the bevel width. Haha im all for overkill magnification better safe than sorry. Hone that bad boy up;-)
Increase the mag to 1000x and then look what you'll find. You have to be reasonable about mag. It can be a boon or a curse. It can make perfectionists go crazy.
You need to decide at what mag level things need to be addressed and at what level they become visual curiosities that will not affect the shave.
100X is in the realm of reasonable. That blemish would definitely gouge a wee bit of flesh.

The reason I put this razor under magnification is because I have never see a factory edge before so when I put it under the scope at 100x I realized that the edge was shit in a lot of places. But I'm all for high power magnification IMO it has greatly improved my honing ability... I know that it is sometimes easy to get to caught up in what you see and you start fishing for things that wouldn't make a difference. What I usually do if I'm debating anything I'll put a strand of hair next to it and it will give some perspective.
There is truth in what TBS is saying, at 1,000 X everything looks like an issue, but at 100 or 400 X, you can see the good, from the bad.
10-20 X is good, 60-100 is better, 200-400 is very good. The problem is at 400 X and up, will take a while to see the whole edge, so start at 60X and if you see an issue, mark it with a dot of Sharpie and zoom in with higher power.
If you are starting out, looking at edges with 60-100 x will tell you a lot about what is going on at the edge, about your hones and your technique.
For every day honing it will drive you nuts. I have a 60-400 USB scope, but I only use it to take edge photos or to teach, because then, we are all looking at the same issue at the same time. For honing, I use a 60X, lighted loupe or the Carson 60-100 micro max. They are quick and easy to use.
So, to the OP, keep looking at edges before and after your work, it will improve your learning curve and insure you are making progress… or not. And with a USB scope you can snap a photo before and after or of issues, as you did.
I have learned that magnification can be a tool, but to those learning they must remember that it's the bevel they are looking at...not the edge.
To the op, it's not a bad chip and will easily come out on a light bevel set, which is normally required with a dovo factory edge.
I've shown this a few times already, but it really is relevant to what was described here. Below is a poorly made (by me) video of a factory edge that also had some issues. You can skip to 1:40 to see a folded edge.Quote:

What kind of scope do you have? I is sweet, you zoom in then focus... All the sub microscopes I've seen are one mag or another
It is a stereomicroscope--a Zeiss Stemi SV8. Its advantage as a stereomicroscope is that I can quickly focus by moving the blade up and down to focus and can rotate the blade to change the light reflection. It makes for a jerky video, but allows me very quick in and out observation while honing.
All this to say there is a chip in the edge. Hone the damn thing again.
And see what mistakes you made...
In fact the chip could have come about thru your handling & not the factory.
Laying an open razor down on a hard surface, closing blade on the scales or bumping a fingernail are all likely.
