Where does one get emery? is there a correct grit to use?

Good question,,,, I would go to Sally's Beauty Supply & go to the section where they have emery boards & other abrasives that are used for the nails. There are many designs of boards & some are shaped like "blocks" with different grit levels. Get a block that has a high grit level & designed for polishing , use that to refresh your surface if you need to. These blocks are not harsh like diamond DMT's or wet/dry paper,,, but some of the nail boards are. Use the foam blocks.
Emery/wet & dry from most any local hardware or automotive store.
I lapped with DMT 1200 and finished mine with 2000 wet & dry under water. Nice smooth glass like finish.
Not trying to go off topic, but carborundum hones come with instructions to place in a pan of hot petroleum jelly to fill the pores - if desired.
