Thread: Honing help in NYC

Hi everyone. I'm fairly new to the straight razor world, almost a year now. And I want to up my honing game. I have been honing and refreshing my razors all myself up to this point and getting CCS. I have a synthetic progression, King 1K, Norton 4/8k and Nani 12k. I've been fine tuning this and am still working on getting it perfect. I've read and watched everything on the internet it seems and I have been lured by the promise of buttery BBS to naturals. Just received my first Coti the other day and waiting for a Thuri from the U.K. And a Zulu Grey from S. Africa. Yeah I seem to have caught a little HAD. And right after I got over my RAD. This is a grueling sport. So I kind of feel like I need some in person help at this point. I'm still making small progressions to smoother more buttery blades and I took a razor that has been stubbornly harsh and I was about to sell it and I tamed it with the Coti. So does anyone know of a meetup or mentor in the NYC area that would be willing to help a HAD disseased newbie find his perfect edge? Thanks.

Put your location in your profile and some one close will let you know, and by the way maybe they can teach you how to use the stones you got. With your 12k you can achieve as good of an edge as you can with all the others stones out there, natural or otherwise.

TC that is exactly what I'm looking for. I want to better my synth honing and explore the naturals. I've been trying to squeeze all I can from what I have, based in large part to GSsixgun . He's one of the reasons I am where I am. I just think at this point a little in person work would jump start my progression. Maybe I just need another year at the hones but I'm certainly trying. Thanks for the suggestion of updating my profile. Done and done.

Good now some of those NYC guys can see where your at, and we have a few up there, you could do a member search and maybe find a mentor near you.

Yes one on one is much better, and they may be able to find out why your not getting all you can, It took some face time for me to get over that hump and find out it's mostly who's doing the honing and not so much the rocks. As long as you have stones that work well for razors. Once I spent time with a couple of here guys like Randy, Ron, Lynn, and of course my friend Gssixgun(Glen), plus my other friend Roy, it all started coming together, now a 12k naniwa is what I finish on even through I have had or do have still many stones, I,m just getting all that it's capable if and its capable of hanging with just about any stone out there. It gives butter smooth shaves like most of the recognized naturals, it's just up to me to do my job. I've often said in Glens hands he could finish a razor on a brick. But some of those naturals are cool and I get great edges from them too.

This is something I have missed is to have someone better than myself show me what they do.
I suppose I should watch some videos, really. I am self-taught with a demo from Lynn a long time ago.

I could never teach someone to hone like I do. I suppose I COULD.
