what would you suggest for a newbie - touch up hone?
get a 4 sided strop from Tony Miller. Pasted on two sides: 1.0, 0.5
I would concur - the pasted paddle is your best bet just for touching up. You could also pick up some barber hones from Tilly at Redtrader99.com. They are slow cutting hones used for exactly this purpose.
A Coticule!!! JMO
I'd have to agree that a coticule would be a good choice for a first hone to touch up a razor that had been properly honed but become less keen with use. I think the best way to touch up that razor however would be with a pasted paddle, given that the stroke is the same as stropping, which, presumably he would already have down pat. Presumably.
Ohhhh, now I understand what all these threads about raising a slurry are about . . . you guys are sick! Wouldn't that be kinda rough? :-)
To get this thread back on track before things get any uglier... :)
The old barber manuals preached that a good newbie touchup hone is one that's a slow cutter. Of the hones I've tried so far, the coticule best fits the bill. Barber hones can be tricky to use, and the Norton is a fast cutter and requires a bit more practice.
We don't have a lot of guys who have started with a coticule as their first hone, though, so I don't know if this theory holds water. It does seem logical to me, though. :)
A 4" long coticule is less than $50 at www.theperfectedge.com.
