    what would you suggest for a newbie - touch up hone?

    get a 4 sided strop from Tony Miller. Pasted on two sides: 1.0, 0.5

    Ditto. I did that and one better: I had a third side pasted with .5 chromium dioxide paste. I swear I get smoother feeling shaves off of that than off of the .5 diamond paste.

    I would concur - the pasted paddle is your best bet just for touching up. You could also pick up some barber hones from Tilly at Redtrader99.com. They are slow cutting hones used for exactly this purpose.

    I'd have to agree that a coticule would be a good choice for a first hone to touch up a razor that had been properly honed but become less keen with use. I think the best way to touch up that razor however would be with a pasted paddle, given that the stroke is the same as stropping, which, presumably he would already have down pat. Presumably.

    Yea, but a natural stone is just sexier. Besides, the edge will not be as fragile and will last longer. JMO

    That I can totally agree with. I've been keeping my belgian combo stone on my nightstand and let me tell you, last night....
