    Default Preferred Hone Size

    It seems to be generally accepted that a hone size of 3"x8" is the standard, but I wonder if this is actually the case. I figured a poll would be the best way to find out.

    From my limited experience, it seems that a hone width just under half the blade length would be the best at preventing the formation of a frown, provided that you pay a little extra attention to the heel. Lenght wise, it would depend on if you prefer holding the hone in hand or resting it on a table.

    I'm going to go with 1.5 x 7, so I can hold it in hand or use a table.

    I tried various sizes, and 3" wide works best for me.
    2,5 would also be fine.

    All I have is an 8x3 (DMT D8EE) but I sure like it...

    I've thought about getting a narrower hone so as not to have to roll the x so dramatically with my smiling W&B.

    A thing occurred to me while reading this thread. Won't the edge gliding on or off the edge of the one do damage to the edge? Or is this ok, as long as you're careful? I also suppose the hone should have rounded edges. Correct?

    Or am I just complicating a simple matter here?

    Yes - a lot of people take the sharp edges off their hones when they lap them. But if you're careful it's not a major issue.

    Anyway, I take whatever I can get in terms of hone size. All of mine are pretty large, but I wouldn't disregard smaller hones if they were available.
