There are more things to grit than size.
Coticule grit is round. Norton 8K grit is very sharp. So with the same size, the coticule grit is much less abrasive.
The cutting speed of the coticule also varies, depending on the use of slurry.
If you use only water for the final finishing, the coticule will only 'cut' with the grits that are still embedded in the clay matrix, so they will cut very fine. It will polish instead of cut when used like that.
