    Default Lapping a Shapton 16k with a DMT D8C

    Can I do this without causing damage? Ordered the Shapton and have no other lapping device but the DMT 325 coarse. Thanks for your help.

    Yes, you'll be fine with using the D8C to lap the Shapton ceramic on glass 16k hone. I own the D8C, the Shapton 16k (my avatar) and I've also owned the Shapton GDLP lapping plate. The GDLP does leave a slightly smoother surface to the Shapton stones, but you'll still have a very smooth surface after lapping the 16k with the D8C.

    Dive feel you have to buy the GDLP to buy the Shapton stones.

    I have both of these plates and think that the DMT will work fine. It is about the same grit as the GDLP Shapton plate and works very well. I wouldn't hesitate to lap my Shapton 16K with it.

    BTW...where did you catch the trout in your avatar. Great fishing in Central PA>

    Default Great news. Another purchase and I'd be in big trouble

    Thanks for the positive info.

    As for the trout Bill, that was a February catch on the famed Letort Springs Creek in Cumberland County. An invite to you or anyone else who is also passionate about sharp hooks as well as blades: let me know if you want to fish Central PAs great streams. I flyfish about one fourth the number of times I shave....enough to be in trouble....less than enough for divorce!

    I'll chime in and say that the D8C should be fine for the
    16k -- I have both the D8C and a DGLP as well. Enjoy

    I have fished the Letort once. Smart trout in that creek.

    I'll see if I can talk Lynn into a little flyfishing roadtrip. He likes to chase trout, too. The guys hooks are always dull for some reason.
